I am being induced on Monday and will be 39 weeks and 2 days. On sunday at 3pm I go to the hospital to get gel on my cervix to help it open. I still am completly closed. When they induce me on Monday they break my water and give me Pictocen? at the same time. Any words or advice with being induced. I heard it is stronger pain and a harder labor. Thanks for the help.
Hi Lynneyd,
I haven't gone through it myself but have witnessed several births as a nurse. Expect that the labor will still probably take a while, like several hours and ask for an epidural when you can have one. That's my advice. Dont' worry, they don't turn the pitocin on full blast at the beginning. It starts out slow. After a while it does tend to bring on the contractions very hard & fast, which is why I recommend the epidural. My poor sister's epidural fell out while she was being induced and she had a bad time of it. They had to turn the pitocin off for a couple of hours and they placed another epidural but it never really caught up to the pain at that point.
Most women have good experiences with the epidural and with being induced, so don't worry. Congratulations for being so close!

I was induced with my first and the labor came on immediately -- very intense (sorry to alert you). I had 23 hours of horrible back labor (it took me forever to dilate). I wanted to die until the epidural provided some relief. I wouldn't deliver naturally without an epidural after that experience. In fact, my labor lasted so long that I needed 9 epidural (yep, count them, 9 epidural shots). This was a bit excessive and caused some back pain post birth, but due to my circumstances, my options weren't the greatest.
You may, of course, have a completely different experience. Let's hope you are one of those women who are in and out in 5 hours or so. I'd still recommend the epi, though -- just my opinion.
Best of luck and congrats. You are very close to holding your precious jewel.
