Question: Progesterone IM injections

Post by tryw8 »

I'm just wondering how long have any of you been kept on the Progesterone IM injections. I've been on it since prior to the FET. Then at WEEK 9, I was placed on PIO 2cc (morning and evening) because I was spotting rather than just the once a day.

It was explained to me that since I didn't conceive the "naturual" way, my the PIO injections are needed to help my body to produce hormones that I'm not producing since it was tricked into getting pregnant.

I've already stopped the EV .4cc 2x/week. My OB/GYN recommends that I will continue to take 81mg baby aspirin until WEEK 32. I'm still taking PIO 2cc in the morning. For now, he has mentioned until WEEK 23  , if I heard right or until further notice. Or I may be put on it once a week. I think I'll still purchase the PIO supplies @ the IVF clinic because at the OB/GYN office, they charge $45 per injection.

So much $$$ for the drugs ... and it is known that I need it.

Any thoughts?... will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Karen,

yes- I have been doing 1cc PIO each evening since the day of ER ( Jan 27th) and they added 1 crinone progesterone suppository 1x day not long after as my level was not quite up to snuff. RE says we'll keep doing these until 12 weeks and they will ween me off of them, however if level is not right as they reduce, I guess I'll have to keep doing them a bit longer. I was under the impression that progesterone aided in the development of the placenta, but I may be wrong.

anyhow- the reason I am on it for that length of time is that the REs think I may not be producing enough on my own, and after all that we've gone through to get this far, it makes sense to take extra precautions. That being said... 23 weeks is a crazy long time!!!

good luck with everything and congrats on your BFP!

Hi Karen, congrats on the pregnancy. I never did the shots just the suppositories, my clinic had me on 2 x400mg daily until week 12, then i was gradually weaned off them over the next 2 weeks. I was led to believe it is only needed until the placenta takes over around weeks 10-12. i am also on aspirin until at least week 34.
good luck.
