i will be 28 weeks in sat. due june 21st. i had to do the 3 hour glucose test and found out that i guess i have gestational diabetes. they wanted me to watch my carb intake and check blood-sugar 4 times a day. some levels have been good a few a little high. does anyone have info on this or going through it? they want to put me on insulin but i am so scared it could hurt the baby, any info is greatly appreciated!!

Hi,
I had it with mine. I was on rest for previa and it was very hard to control it because of it. I tried my best to avoid the insulin shots and I did just fine. The key is to follow their instructions strictly and take walks right after eating. You can eat a lot of cheese, eggs, meat and veggies. Nonni's biscotti worked great for a snack. In the mornings, it was harder to control the glucose in the blood due to high levels of pregnancy hormones. So, try eating more protein for bfast.

Hope this helps! It will only be for 2-3 mo. now. You will be fine after that. Make sure to tell the hospital staff about the GD when you go in to deliver. They will check the baby's respiration right away. Some babies end up having breathing problems due to mother's GD because baby gets large and placenta gives up providing nutrients. But no worry, it is nothing that the doctors can not fix. If the problem does happen, it is short term.

Hi Carolina Girl,
I dont' have GD, but as a nurse I'm pretty familiar with it. Don't worry, if you have to go on insulin(and that's a big if), it won't hurt your baby. They dont' think it even crosses the placenta. So all it will really do to baby is help keep the baby from getting too big or developing other complications and help keep you much healthier. You'll just be put on regular insulin, not any type of long lasting insulin or pills.
Nowadays, GD is usually caught early enough so that changes in diet & exercise can really help prevent you from having to go on insulin. But it you do have to start, don't worry overly. You will most likely be able to stop after giving birth, and may never have another problem with diabetes again -esp. if you are able to maintain healthy weight.
My advice would be to watch you diet like they advised, try to take walks if possible or other light exercise if you can, and expect then expect some good news when you go in for your follow-up
Good Luck,
