Hi ladies,
I'm not having the best couple of days, comfort wise. I had pain and period like intense cramps in my lower abdomen and lower back (and yesterday also inner thighs). It is actually painful when I try to get comfortable in bed, even supported by pillows. I went to the doc yesterday and they found no contractions, uterus is closed and the pregnancy seems fine. I was afraid I had a UTI a few weeks ago, but it came back negative. Does anyone know if I DID develop a UTI within the past couple of weeks, could this have affected my kidneys? Did anyone else here have similar pains in their second trimester? I'm going for a urine test tomorrow, but right now, I'm in panic mode, unfortunately, and driving my husband crazy (although he is being very strong and supportive for me). Sitting here a complete mess . Someone help please. Thanks.

Hi Shari,
So sorry you're not feeling well. If you have an infection in your kidneys they will be able to tell from your urine. I had a kidney infection a few years back & it felt like a jackhammer on my mid to lower back. I think you could also expect a low grade fever with a kidney infection & possibly an upset stomach. Perhaps you are having ligament pain but I don't think that's supposed to be quite as bad as what you are describing. I'm glad you're going to see the MD. Just try to take it easy & rest until then.
Hope all is well & you start feeling better soon.

Rebecca-
Thanks so much for your reply. I am having bad lower back pains now as well, and those lower abdominal/groin pains continue coming in sharp waves. I've calmed down a bit, reminding myself that I've kept pretty close watch so far and I'm doing all I can to nip this in the bud. Can I ask how your kidney infection was treated? Did it clear up pretty quickly? Can this do major harm to me or my baby if that is in fact what it is? I realize you may not know the answers to these questions, but I know your medical knowledge may shed some light. Thanks so much again for your response.
Be well .

A kidney infection is treated just like a UTI except a longer course of antibiotics is needed. The only way it is going to do major harm is if it is left completely untreated. I'm not a doctor, but it sounds like IF this is what you have then it's not really a bad one. Bad kidney infections will make you much much sicker with nausea, vomiting, fever, etc. And even those are very treatable with antibiotics.
Hang in there. You are right -you've been very closely monitored so far in this pregnancy. Maybe you could go into the MD today? Or if the pains get worse go to the emergency room? I would also try drinking lots of water and lying down.
Rebecca
Rebecca-
Your concern and support today has been a true blessing on this upsetting day. (Reminds me a bit of our 2ww ). I did have a vomiting episode today but that's nothing new for me this pregnancy, and I think it's partially due to getting worked up and crying over all this. I have no major fever (something like 99), AND the best news is that the pain now is a bit less intense. I am going for my urinalysis first thing in the morning, and staying home again. My doc is in tomorrow, so I'll call and see if he wants to schedule me immediately. If not, I see him again thursday.
You are a sweety, thanks sooo much. Also, I hope everything is well with you and your little guy .

Sharishu, I had severe lower abdominal/groin pian in my 2 Tri turned out to be round ligament. The first time was worse that the second time and each was slightly different. Doc said take some tylenol for the pain and relax no strenuous activity. Something as simple as the wet clothes doing laundry could cause the strain. it usually takes a few days to subside and is very scary but does not effect the baby at all only makes you uncompfy. I am sure that all is well try to lay down and relax the less I moved the better it felt the first time I actually took one day off work and just stayed off my feet!

Aliann,
Thanks so much, your post was very reassuring. I am thinking now that it is ligament pain and not an infection (I hope). I ended up speaking to a friend yesterday who just gave birth who described similar pains as well.
Rebecca,
The pain is definitely lessening, and I am resting up today. I am much calmer than yesterday. I appreciate all your input and thanks for the pm. It's good to know that I am not alone in feeling all these unfamiliar sensations. See you on the regular thread!
Have a great day,
Shari

I am SO glad that you posted. Last night I woke up with similar, intense constant pain. It felt like menstrual cramps, right above my pubic bone (no back pain) and I am 17 weeks. I laid in bed for an hour panicking and wondering what I should do, but there was no blood - so a middle of the night trip to the ER seemed over the top. Finally I woke DH and he tried to be supportive, but really just wanted to go back to sleep! My DR's office will open in a few hours and I will call them, but sounds like I am in good company.

I also had this around 17 weeks. Called my RE and he said round ligament pain. Sharp stabbing pain. Could hardly walk straight. Almost impossible to go from sitting to standing. It did go away after a few days. I was also petrified it was something else and thought possible contractions but turned out to be round ligament pain. It seems to be the time when you're really stretching to make room for the baby/ies to grow!
Hope it subsides soon..

Yes, it does sound like the same pain I experienced. Dexter- I also had trouble walking, and shifting positions. The worst position was lying down , so there went my sleep! MLB- I am glad that you were able to find my post to reassure you. I know I was terrified and panicked, so I know what you must have been going through. I was also thinking contractions, since the pains were very sharp and came in waves.
How are you guys feeling now? TG, I feel much better.
