I found out yesterday I'm pregnant after our 3rd IVF attempt. Yeah!!
Painful part...I have developed OHSS as a result of the onset of pregnancy.
I am really hurting. I've gained 7 pounds in the last 2 days and have swollen so much that I feel as if my skin is stretching.
My doctor recommended drinking tons of fluids, along with getting as much salt in me as possible. I am drinking tons of pickle juice, putting loads of salt on things I eat and eating roman noodles (tons of sodium). However, it feels like it's getting worse.
Does anyone know anything else that could help me get over this without them having to go in and drain the fluid?
Thanks!
Cheryl

I was in your boat. I did have the drain put it and yea it hurt to put it in but it was almost instant releif. I was really dehydrated so I had an iv and protein for 5 days but i tell you I was misrible. I had the drain for 2 weeks but I cant imagine how it would have been if I never got it. So keep trying your liquids until you can't stand it anymore.

As I type my belly is getting even more bloated. Grrrr...I guess when I told the Lord He could give me every preg. sympton just as long as we get pregnant He took me up on it.
Question: I've heard they put you out to drain the pockets. Is this bad for baby or increase the risk of miscarriage that you know?

Hi Cheryl,
I also have OHSS, but just a mild case, have not been drained or anything, I was told to drink lots and lots of Gatorade (or any of those electrolyte drinks), also lemon juice... it worked for me, but mine was just a mild case of OHSS.
No ma'am I was not put out when they put drain in. It hurt dont get me wrong but I had pain mets shot rightin my iv so I was out of it with-in a min. I just remember feeling pressure and kinda moaning but was out of it b/c of the meds. It was scary but i couldnt imagine it getting worse. I was gaining a pound or two every day or two. I think i was up 10-12 pounds when they put in the drain. It was sooo worth it before hand I couldnt eat or sleep and couldnt really take good breaths or anything b.c I hurt so bad I was misrible. Its all a little fresh still I was in hospital feb 4-9. Once they were able to keep my hydrated without iv for a day they let me go. Then you go home and try to only drain once a day or so. That way your body learns to absorb the fluid and you dont get dehydrated and end up right back in the hospital. After they pulled it out after 2 weeks I was minimally bloated but now i can fit my clothes and I dont even notice and I am completly normal. It totally sucked but like you at least we are preg. and so its worth it. Hard decision i had it for like 15 days before I got dehydrated and was put in hospital. If its starting to go down and your able to drink and breathe then maybe try to stick it out.good luck and keep me posted.l

Cheryl, I developed OHSS but my case never became severe enough to drain. I did gain about 7 lbs in a week I week from a size 30 waist to a 37 and couldn't wear anything. I drank a ton of water and I had to take a day or 2 off work the thinkg that helped me the most was laying down doing nothing which wasn't hard because I was in pain. If you can try a little bed rest.

Thanks to everyone for the words of advice and encouragement. I'm still up almost 10 pds and look like a swollen toad. Ribbit! I'm also a little sick to my stomach and my lower back aches. Not sure if that's due to this or not.
The hard part of this is that I am supposed to start a part-time job on Monday. When I told my RE, he just looked like it wasn't the best idea. I had to tell my soon-to-be boss today that I'm newly pregnant, have this weird condition, and may not be able to start on Monday. Poor guy - I can only imagine what he was thinking...
I'm sooooo tired of salt...I'm turning into a salt lick!

I had mild/moderate OHSS in the beginning of my pregnancy as well. I was told to drink lots of Gatorade and eat more protein (Something like 80 grams/day). This is supposed to pull the fluid out of the abdomen. It resolved at around 9 weeks or so. It really sucked. I don't understand why your dr. would tell you to increase your salt intake, though, since salt makes you retain fluid. I would double-check this. Hang in there...you will feel better and then be able to enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.
