Two embryos of one?

Post by Lula »

Hi

My DH and I are about to start our first cycle and unsure whether we should make the choice to implant two embryos or just stick with one (if we end up with any at all). I am 26 years old and absolutely devastated at having to make all these huge decisions. However, this seems to be the one nagging me most. I have no problem with twins, but am terrified of not being able to carry them to full term and having seriously ill premmy babies. My DH and I are leaning towards two in the hope that 1 will take. Does anyone have any experience with this, especially women who have or are pregnant with twins. Did everything go ok with the pregnancy?

Help!

Does your clinic do 3 or 5 day transfers? If they do a 3 day, I would consider transferring 2. If they do blastocyst transfers, then you could do 1 and have a relatively good chance of it sticking. I think I read they have a higher implantation rate.
I transferred 2 3day embies, I don't know how many stuck. Check your clinic's stats and see if they have better outcomes with 1 or 2. You are young so that is a plus.
I'm no expert, but I hope this helps!

I have twins from my first attempt at IVF. They did come 7 weeks early, but they are perfectly healthy boys. They had no problems when they were born, they just had to wait for them to be able to eat from their bottle before sending them home with us. If you aren't afraid of twins then I'd say go for 2 embryos. Just take it easy during your pregnancy because they can be risky. You are young so you will probably not have any problems. I was 37 when I gave birth and could be why they came early. Good luck!

Hi Lula,

I have always transferred 2. I am in the UK and my clinic only do 2 day transfers. I am 39 and carrying twins, as i write this i am on my lunch break at work, DH and i own our own shop. I have felt fine over the whole pregnancy, and have just started to feel ready to stop, I am planning on giving up tomorrow but i will stilll pop in a couple of times a week to do odd jobs whilst i am able. I also have a consultant visit tomorrow and i think he will sign me off, as with the warm weather arriving and me measuring 40 weeks for a singleton my feet and ankles have started to swell. As my DH puts it i am starting to crap out, and need to be home resting. I have thoroughly enjoyed the pregnancy so far, but i can admit it is getting tough now.
The best advice i could give is eat healthily, take regular excerise, and know your limitations. I have swum and walked all the way through, i have had no health issues at all.
Good luck with your next cycle

Hi Lula,

Its a tricky one and I think there are lots of things to consider. 3 day vs 5 day is a good point.....5 day blasts have a better chance of implantating. Embryo quality would be a factor, too.......we had 4 embryos, that were thawed, only 2 looked like they weren't doing great, so we transfered all 4. This was a bit risky because they were all blasts but another factor to consider is your lining at the time of transfer. My lining wasn't optimal so we were preppared to be a bit more agressive. Twins do come with extra risks, I don't know how accurate this is but I read somwehere that only 20% end up being twin deliveries after a twin conception.....40% have a vanishing twin and become singletons and 40% miscarry. That sounds pretty scary but I see lots of people carry twins to close to full term here. Full term for twins is actually 37 not 40 weeks. Anyway, I'm not sure how helpful all this info is and I know how tough these decisions are, so best of luck to you, I hope it works out for you.

Hello,

I had two embryos transferred and am now pregnant with twins. It has been a little difficult for me. I've been on bedrest for two and a half weeks due to a blood clot at 14 weeks. Babies are doing fine. I am short statured so i have a lot of aches and pains. I am currently measuring 30 weeks for a singleton. If I did a transfer again, I probably would still transfer two due to all the money we pay for this and my chances are increased. I'm just praying that the Lord will take care of me and my babies during this pregnancy and that I will not have preterm later. I am currently back at work and doing fine. Good luck with your decisions. Me and you are the same age.

We transfered 4 embies. 1 - 10 cell, 2-8 cell and one 5 cell, all perfect with no fragmentation and we are pregnant with one baby boy. It is a very hard decision having to pick out the number to implant, see what the success rate is for your clinic, I am 37 and my RE strongly advised for doing all 4.
Good luck!

Hi there,

I just wanted to share with you that me and my DH recently made the same very difficult decision. I agree with all the ladies who have posted, particularly about the fact that what type of transfer you do and the quality will likely make the biggest difference in your decision.

I'm 32 and my DH is 31, we had two high (ish) quality blasts and decided to transfer only one. The thing that tipped us over the edge in our decision making was the fact that 2 transfers can theoretically become 3-4 (which is obviously quiet rare), but this was the risk we decided not to take the 1st time around. If this one doesn't work out we will do 2 next time.

Good luck, its definitely a tough decision.

For dh and I the decision came down to what would disappoint or worry us more? We were more afraid of getting a BFN after all the money and stress of ivf, than we were about having multiples. I am a strong believer in the Lord not giving us more than we can handle. You have to trust your body and your doctors to protect your babies if you end up with 2 or more.

We tx 2-5day blastocytes and originally both stuck. One did not make it past 4-5 wks and we are now 15wks pregnant with one. I was perfectly satisfied to see my one growing and thriving at my 6wk u/s. I almost didnt even consider that we had another at one time. Whats meant to be will be, I believe.

Good luck with your decision and your ivf!!

We are on our first cycle, and were given the choice to transfer 2 or 1 as 2 were looking great at day 5 which was 5/27. We transferred both. Echoing above, we decided which part would scare us more. Twins or even the more rare more than, or no baby at all. We decided to go for it, but again everyone has to weigh their own risks and overall desires.

Good luck to you, and know you will make the right decision for your family!

Hi Lula,
We had our first cycle of IVF in december. The nurses and doctors would ask us if we wanted 1 or 2 embryos transfered but when we said we wanted 2, they told us that they would only transfer 1 anyway due to my age ( i'm also 26 ) and the fact that i have PCOS. so after all our agonising over that stupid question, we never had the choice anyway
