Possible OHSS...what do I drink for fluids? Help!

Post by IrishHope »

I have heard conflicting things on what to drink for OHSS...my E2 level is over 2800 and I have about 24 follicles but I'm not ready to "trigger" - my nurse said they may retrieve but not transfer and freeze everything if I overstimulate...

my nurses have said drink any fluids...even gatorade which I know is controversial...anyone have a rememdy to stave off OHSS? more bloodwork/usound tomorrow morning to determine if this cycle will not get to transfer....THanks!

I was just reading something about this in a brochure I got at the RE's office. I didnt read it in depths, but if I remember correctly it said not to drink gateraid because of the sugar, but drink pedialite (msp?), high protein foods and something about salt. Either high salt or no salt at all, I think it was no salt. The high protein diet (like atkins) absorbs all the fluids from your body, which is why so many people loose 10 lbs in 5 days, its all the fluid.

Hope this helps!!

I have heard that a combination of Gatorade and whey protein works well.

Are you on a long Lupron protocol? Or perhaps Ganirelix or Cetrotide?

Thanks Dakota - I remember seeing somethign about salt as well - I bet it's to eat salty stuff to absorb the fluid?

GHOST - I am on long lupron protocol - started on 5/6 with lupron and started 150iui Gonal F 5/20 thru 5/26 and it's been reduced to 37.5 iui

my first cycle review last time said I was "slightly" overstimulated(was on 300 iui Gonal F then reduced to 150 but only stimmed 7 days)I know it takes time for REs to determine exact protocols and see how each individual responds based on each individual's "issue"...

Thanks again!

Hi Irish--

Sorry you are flirting with OHSS. When I triggered my E2 was up over 5000! I barely managed to convince them to perform my ET. From what I have read, my case was mild/moderate and I assure you it was no fun.

Here's what my RE told me to consume:
Low carb, high protein, high salt diet (I purchased a big container of salted almonds, ate a lot of chicken)
V-8 juice (not the fruit infused kind) My RE said that the electrolyte/sodium balance is perfect. I had to hold my nose because I find the stuff GAGGING.
Chicken broth
Concoction of 1 part Gatorade to 1 part water

Good luck Irish!

If you were on ganirelix acetate or Cetrotide, then you could use Lupron for the "trigger" and avoid hCG and OHSS.

Since you are already on Lupron, you cannot use it for the trigger. It won't do anything. You do have one choice for avoiding hCG. That would be to trigger with rLH (recombinant LH). This is not very practical, though, because it comes in 75 IU vials, so you'd need to take a hundred doses or so.

So you're stuck with hCG.

I see they are almost coasting you at this point anyway. By the way, 24 follicles and 2800 E2 is not all that extreme. It's a strong response. It puts you near the low end of significant OHSS risk.

The Gatorade and whey protein are supposed to work pretty well.

Thanks for the responses...oh geez I'm "coasting" - they didnt' tell me that part! My nurse said they will use 3400 for the cut off E2 level so tomorrow if i'm over 3400 they'll retrieve and not transfer...

I guess I'll have my answer tomorrow afternoon...

Thanks again!
