Made consult appt for IVF...so many questions

Post by jeffer01 »

:D My name is Jennifer and I am 38 years old. DH is 39 and we have no children. Have tried for 17 years!!! Yes, 17. Did a year and a half of IUI without success, just lots of Clomid, after hours procedures and money.

Have endometriosis that has a life of it's own! Have tried different medications and therapies and finally decided I was going to retire my reproductive system in August.....then DH decided he didn't care about the IVF cost, we would try!

Made appt and 1st available was August 4th!! Now scared, nervous, and thinking I am going to lose it while waiting. I have searched for more info on IVF, but need personal feedback. I am so scared that at my age I will not be a good candidate :( . Anyone know how that feels or advice?
Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forum!
IVF is stressful at any age...I was kinda depressed when I found out I had to do it at 28.
At the consult they will usually do an exam, pap, ultrasound, bloodwork and DH's SA and blood work too. Its a lot of poking and prodding. They might have you do an HSG or additional tests.
Have you had your FSH level checked? I believe that is what determine your ovarian reserve, and the higher the number the less eggs you have. My best friend went through premature menopause at 28 and she was told she would need to use donor eggs. Unfortunately the older you are the stronger the possiblity of needing a donor egg.
I would make sure both you and DH are ready to committ fully the emotional and financial needs of IVF. As long as you have eachother to lean on, things will be ok!
Good luck!

Hi Jennifer,
I am new to this process as well. I am glad we found this site as there are many people that can really help! we had our consultation and we start the end of June. Waiting is the hardest part, I know! Is there a reason that you have to wait until August or can you be seen earlier? Just try to keep busy, trust me...I know that is easier said than done.

Michelle,
I am with you on the age thing! I never thought that at ag 27 I would be having to go through all of this either. It is frustrating! Especially since all of my friends and co-workers seem to be pregnant without even a thought. I'm trying to be strong and not let me jealousy seep through. :o

Hi ladies,

The first cycle of IVF can be very daunting. There is so much uncertainty involved and so much that we don't know. I have found this board of so much support when I'm going through this whole thing. And yes, it can be even more depressing when women around us can get pregnant within a month of trying (or "by accident" as some claim).

Why don't you join us in the "awaiting treatment" thread on the general forum. There are a few of us in between cycles, or waiting for the first consult. Its a crazy bunch, but we have kept each other going during some rough times.
