UTI and Macrobid while pregnant?!?

Post by rlk1 »

Hi all,

I was hoping you ladies could give me some advice. I'm 16.5 weeks pregnant and think I might have a UTI. I called my ob-gyn's office and the on-call doctor said he'd just give me a prescription for Macrobid and that I should call if I don't feel better after the antibiotics. I asked if, instead, I could come in to leave a urine sample (to make sure it was a UTI) and when I got there it was a different doctor in the practice that saw me. He said that the sample looked "non-descript" but that he'd send it in for culture anyways. He also said he wanted me to take the antibiotics in case the culture came back positive.

I really, really don't want to take it (especially since I might not have a UTI!!!), but everyone I've talked to says it's fine to take while pregnant and that the alternative (a possible UTI) is much worse for the baby.

I must admit, even after two doctors at my ob-gyn's office told me to take the Macrobid, I emailed a high-risk doctor about it. He said that Macrobid is safe to take and that "the risk of taking an unnecessary course of antibiotics while pregnant is minimal".

I'm a dork, and I'm still worried---so any advice/experience would be much appreciated. Have any of you ladies taken Macrobid while pregnant and/or have you taken it without a firm confirmation that you have a UTI?

Sorry for the lengthy email!! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

I just finished my macrobid for the same thing. I am very high risk and have the best docs in the area. It is safe and fine. I questioned them, too. LOL You are right to question them and to be worried, but it is fine. I had no symtoms (except blood in my urine) at my reg OB visit and they sent me down for lab work which took over the weekend and sure enough ...I had one. I also read that letting one go can be worse for the baby, rather than going ahead and treating it. If you're cultures come back that you dont have one ....then you will have only been on it for a few days, anyways. UTI's are sooo common and they are probably right ...that is probably what it is...since you are even having symtoms. I have already had 2 UTI's (with no symtoms). I hope you feel better.

Hi TammyS!

Thank you SO much for responding!! Not that I would wish this on anyone, but it comforts me to know that others have gone through this as well.

I hope all is well with you. I've read that the incidence of UTIs peaks around 24 weeks, so hopefully you won't have to face another one!!

Thanks, again, for your post!
