Hi everyone. My gestational carrier (surrogate) is expecting twins for us. We are more than excited to say the least. Does anyone know any info on vanishing twins? My gc's first ultrasound was at 6wks4day and both were measuring on target and both had a heartbeat of 123bpm. Since they both have a good heartbeat and the heartbeats are the same, does my chance go down of having a vanishing twin? I'm so paranoid. We finally are successful and I want this to stick and be perfect. So if anyone knows anything about this syndrome I would love to hear. Thanks!!!

I started off showing twins, then triplets. But unfortunately only one blessed bean has made it. The "twin" never showed a heartbeat and the 3rd one ended up just being a sac.
My RE said that once a heartbeat is detected your odds decrease for having the "vanishing" syndrome.
Hope this helps! Good luck with your babies!

Congrats on your pregnancy! I am currently 38 weeks pregnant w/one baby (due 8/4). Back in 12/07, my 7 week U/S revealed two gestational sacs and two heartbeats. One embryo was appropriately sized and had a normal h/b. The other was measuring small (5 weeks, maybe) and had a h/b of 90. The RE told me this second pregnancy was likely a vanishing twin & not viable. I went back in 1 week for an U/S and sure enough they did not find a h/b for that twin. I am no expert on this issue, but I think oftentimes there is some indication that something is not right early on. I wish you the very best. Take it a day at a time.

Carisa, I don't want to upset you just to share my story and what my OB told me. at my 7 week U/S with the RE I had 2 very strong HB's size was right on target everything looked great, I was released and I made an appointment with my OB at 8w2d and I had lost one of the twins. My OB said that this is very common about 1 in 8 women lose a twin thing of it is most women never even know they had a twin to begin with. In doing IVF we get the U/S so early that we see things that most women don't. Funny that my OB stated 1 in 8 I was on a thread with great women through my 2ww and on that board about 15 got pregnant 8 of us with twins all with in about a 2 weeks range and I was the only one who lost a twin. I am not a religious person but I do think that everything happens for a reason I have a very beautiful, healthy baby girl and although I was devastated when I found out I had lost the other one I am so happy with what I have. Everything will work out just stay focused and happy and all will be well. Good luck, Ali

Thanks for sharing. It's so hard not to worry but I know I would be so happy as well with one baby. After all of this IF stuff, I'm just so excited to finally have a baby(ies) on the way. After seeing them on the ultrasound I would be so sad to lose one, but I believe God is in control. Hopefully things will be just fine, and I'm worrying for nothing. My gestational carrier is 10 weeks now. Her next ultrasound will be when she is 11wks4days. I will know then how things are going. Wish me luck!!
