Failed IVF???

Post by vikkim »

I am currently 14 days post Egg Retrieval with a 4 day transfer of 2 embryos graded 1A and 1B. I have been very bad during the 2ww and have done HPT everyday for the last 5 days and they have all been NEGATIVE! Tomorrow morning is my HCG draw and I am prepared for the bad news. I have had bad cramping like AF is banging on the door and only a slight pink discharge when I went to the bathroom yesterday. My questions are as follows:

1) Has anyone ever had a positive after this many negatives?

2) Why have I not had any bleeding or even spotting?

3) If it is negative, when should I expect my period or do I not get one (I know this is probably a dumb question)?

I want to stay positive for you, I really do, but just in case please be prepared for a negative. You will not get a period while on progesterone. You may spot, but until the progesterone goes down to almost zero you will not get a true bleed. If you stop the progesterone tomorrow you should get your period in a couple of days. I'll be thinking of you...
I am an infertility nurse and I work in a major IVF facility. I am willing to answer questions and give guidance, however, since I am not treating you, only your physician can give you the most accurate information.

Thank you for your reply IVF nurse. My progesterone level last friday was 30 so I can now see why I haven't had any bleeding or spotting.

It's hard to stay positive, I know- you feel like you are living in denial if you see signs that it is a big fat NO and continue to hope it's a huge YES. If it didn't happen this time then something just wasn't right. If you have the means to try again... start thinking about what can be learned from this cycle if you get a no.

Ivfnurse is right, as long as you are on the progesterone you won't start anything yet. I had a m/c my winter cycle and it was hard to explain to everyone that while I had bleeding from the m/c (at the time it was too early to tell if it had been a full m/c) and it stopped that it could still mean I had one. Several who had had their own m/c (none IVF) couldn't relate because once they had it they had a full period. Trying to explain to everyone that I wasn't going to get my period until I stopped the shots was one of the most difficult things because I was trying to stay positive that the worst hadn't happened... all the while realizing it may have. Once we confirmed the fetus wasn't there (a couple of weeks later) I stopped the shots and within a few days started.
I hope that you get a positive and it's just too slight yet to register, but either way remember it will be ok... you'll be ok.

still hoping

I know exactly how you feel. I don't have good news, but I would still stay hopeful because I have heard women getting NEG hpt, but getting blood draw the same day and it's POS! I had very bad cramping nearly the whole 2ww, took hpt everyday the last 3 days...all NEG. Blood work last monday was NEG! My last progestrone shot was sunday night. I spotted on thursday and full period on Friday morning. BAD cramps now and lots of blood because the lining was built up so much. This is what you can expect after a negative. Period 4-5 days after your last shot.

I still was hopeful and my DH was certain we were POS.
We sacrifice so much being a military family. He is gone a lot and he is so wonderful. He deserves to be a daddy. I am sad for him more than myself. Anyway .... good luck to you. Stay hopeful.
