We have to make the decision tomorrow morning wheather to transfer on Saturday (day 3) or Monday (day 5). I only had five follicles, 4 eggs, 3 fertilized but two seem to be of less good quality (will know more tomorrow morning). The IVF center recommends ET on Saturday but we had aimed for 5 day transfer. Do you have any statistics or recommendations (Im 38 years old, DH morphology).
All the best
Josefin
I don't know if my stats are typical but out of 19 that fertilized, only 6 made it to day 5. So, with that in mind, I probably would go with a 3 day transfer, too, if I were you.......but I'm far from any kind of expert.

During the education day at the clinic I go to, they said unless there were five nearly perfect embies, they wouldn't go to a day five transfer. The reason is that none of them may make it to day five. Even with 5 or 6 really good ones, you could run the risk of having none to transfer. I had a 6 really good ones & 2 pretty good ones. I choose to have a day 3 transfer anyway. I got a BFP today. Some think that embies do better in the body anyway where they would naturally grow. When I made my decision, my RE told me it was just a selection tool anyway. Only the strongest make it to day 5, but that doesn't mean that if placed in the uterus the others wouldn't "take". Therefore, we didn't take the chance & did a day 3 transfer.
Josefin-
if your REs recommend transfer Saturday- I would go with that- they tend to have a standard protocol and used that to get the best results.
My REs used 3dt- and I asked why not 5dt - they said this was the protocol they developed and have had great success rates
well, after 1st IVF, I am holding our 6 day old baby in my arms.
good luck with transfer and fingers crossed for a BFP!
Josefin, I don't know if you have time, but I listen to a radio show (actually I listen to it after it airs as a podcast) on infertility. They have phenomenal shows and guests and I remember this topic being discussed on a recent show. I looked at the website and I think it was the Sept. 17 show of Facts and Myths about IVF, but I'm not 100% sure which show. If I remember they talked about how to weigh the odds of survival to blast vs. stronger embies at blast. Good luck with your decision. Oh, I forgot to mention the name of the show. It is Creating a Family and the website is www.creatingafamily.com. I don't really like the way they have changed the listing of old shows on the radio page, but it is easiest to just click on the list of old shows and it will take you to a PDF file of all old shows. You can listen to them whenever you want.
I have been told by a couple of REs, that embryos that would make it in the body, might not make it n the lab. Since you have only 3, I would transfer them all back on day 3. That is what I would do. I do not know why you would do a day 5 transfer, unless you feel the lab media is better for them than the uterus. I have read that the uterine environment is different than the fallopian tube (which is where they are until day 5). So if the lab is excellent and their media is great, one could argue, that in a way, that is a better environment than the uterus from days 3 to 5.
But I still would do the day 3...

hi, i just had 2 embies transferred yesterday, at day 3. they were A- graded..i'm 36, and they froze 2 others that were B's... they told me the 3 day transfer was about my age, and that they'd usually only see if they could get them to blastocyst if i had alot more. i'm a low responder.
when all else fails- i listen to my clinic. i think it's best you listen to them, they are the experts and this is why you've hired them.
good luck..see you in the 2WW! karen

Hi All,
many, many thanks for all your replies. We decided to transfer on Saturday (Day 3) three embies after long discussions, internet search and developing formulas (we are both engineers , similar to what you said, if the culture in my uterus is better than lab culture (which I will never know). In the end we came to conclusion that it probably does not matter and we therefore decided based on feeling and three days felt right for us as we only have 3 and no frosties. At least 1 looked ok, the other two most likely will not make it.
Doctor said I could jump out of there and it would not matter, however I am worried and felt I probably made their first day unpleasant by spending long day at IKEA furniture shopping afterwards.........
Taking a few days off now to avoid major stress at work setting budgets... but waiting at home is not easy.....
