Sub Chorionic Bleed anyone?

Post by BabiesGalore »

Has anyone had a sub chorionic bleed? I just found out i had one last week after having experiencing some bleeding and constant spotting. How long does it usually last? Does the spotting stop? Any advice? Really worried.

Hi Kiddo!
I have been having spotting of all kinds since starting my pregnancy. Like you, it comes and goes.
Because the doctor's couldn't really find the source of the bleeding, they looked into the sub-c. bleed as a possiblity for what I had, but didn't find anything.
In the past, doctors didn't know about these bleeds and they would clot off the placenta, depriving the baby. Luckily, today they know what it is and can treat it if found and intervened on early enough. From what I understand, your risk increases, but this doesn't mean you won't be able to have a healthy baby when everything is said and done.
You will basically be on baby aspirin and heparin shots, as well as some form of progesterone for the duration of the pregnancy. You will probably need more frequent ultrasounds to measure the width of the bleed and to see if any clots are forming.
Keep us posted on how you are doing, okay?

I was in a similar posistion as you although mine was filled with a bit more drama and two trips to ER becuse of intense bleeding.

Ill spare you the details, but I started to bleed at 9 weeks and it lasted until I was 15.5 weeks. They could not find the source bu my peri was 95% sure that I had a sub chronic bleed they just could not see. They moitered me closely and the bleeding I had started out as heavy bright read blood for about 2 weeks and then turned brown with a medium flow until 15.5 weeks. i am carrying twins and my last sonogram , both babies were doing great.

I want you to know I know how scarey ANY kind of bleeding is. So my thoughts are with you. But I have found allot of woman bleed and still go on to have successful pregnancies.

I wont tell you not to worry, cause is almost impossible not to. But I hope you take comfort in knowing that not all bleeding means gloom and doom. I feel for you and wish you a good outcome...think positive , it does help.

Thanks Toobee and fluppypuppygal. This really makes me feel better knowing there are similar cases out there. So far the bleeding has stopped but i know it is only a matter of time before it comes back again. My ob does not seem to be worried to much. Anyway i go in next friday for my 12th week scan and nuchal tests. Just keeping my fingers cross.

Hi!
Well, you now have an official "bleeding buddy!" (Joke, joke!)
On Thursday night I was working in the ER and suddenly had a large discharge of black/brown blood come draining out. (Yuck and yikes!) Luckily, it was a slow night and I had friends on duty who got me examined and up to ultrasound within an hour.
Just like you, sub c. bleed! I have two old areas - the one on the placenta edge which apparently burst open and drained that night (the old brown blood I saw), and one more which is more buried in the placenta which is about the size of a small tablespoon. It may drain, but will probably just clot and sit, taking up space. Good news is baby seems to be handling it okay and has a good, strong heartbeat along with movement.
Yesterday was spent at home with minor cramping, and I have been trying to take things slow - not easy with the hectic holidays coming up! Aspririn 81mg for me, and my OB/GYN has referred me to a perinatologist specialist.
Let's just hold in there!! It ain't over till its over!

I have one too... no fun.
But mine is not bleeding. it's just hanging out...
My doctor told me to STOP taking baby aspirin as he felt that baby aspirin can help prevent them at the start but once they are there you don't want them to bleed more.... so confusing. He wants it to get absorbed like a bruise that goes away so baby aspirin wouldn't allow that....
My RE also stopped my PIO at 7 weeks and now I'm wondering if that's bad. It's confusing as I got switched to my OB at 8 weeks.... and I'm currently 9 weeks exactly... Is it really true you need more progesterone? my little one was thriving despite it and i've heard continuing PIO to far into the pregnancy can affect the sex organs of a little boy if that's the case....
anyway - i totally feel your uncertainty. as if we need another thing to obsess over!! the 2ww was bad enough!!

best wishes....

My Peri took me off baby aspirin as well until all my bleeding cleared for 10 days straight. As far as your PIO shots, as long as your levels are good then you dont need PIO shots. I was told to stop taking my PIO after only one week because my P4 levels where fairly high anyway. SO when your progesterone levels get to a certian point, the PIO really doesnt do any good from what my RE said. Your body should be making P4 naturally by now ules your counts were low. So I think your RE stopped your PIO because it wasnt doing anything for you because your body was making plenty.

Were any of you put on bedrest or lifting restrictions? I have had three doctors say three different things. (This is the same for the meds and treatment!)
I hate to sound crazy, but I have a full-time, active job as well as a lot of commitments and activities I would like to keep up with. I want a safe pregnancy, too.
Just how active can we be? I'm not wanting to go out and ski, but just being able to work and Christmas shop would be nice!

My Peri put me on complete bed rest until I wasnt passing anymore clots or bleeding heavy, or red blood for a period of 3 days. But I was on put on reduced actitivty for a month...they preffereed me horizontal. I think thats because I have twins...not sure. I am considered a high risk pregnancy. But I dont have anymore beeding, just an annoying white discharge which they tell me is all part of pregnancy! YUCK!

Thanks Toobee... your answer was helpful. Yes my RE said my placenta was making more Progesterone then I could get ever get from the PIO.... so I just trusted him - but I notice so many women are on progest until the 12th week.... maybe as you say they have low levels... Can't say I miss those shots!!

As for bed rest. my doctor said he doesn't believe in strict bedrest - but I'm on "REST" - which means no stress, no sex, no lifting, limited walking, not a lot of standing, no exercise - until this thing eases... So I've been working etc. just making sure I sit a lot and try not to walk to fast - i'm in NYC so that's hard.

hopefully this thing will go away so I can at least do something like yoga.... !!

fingers crossed for us all... I have an u/s tomorrow to see if it's shrunk or grown. I'm a little nervous.

Good luck with your U/S tommorrow. !

And hope everyones bleeding stops ASAP. If this provides any comfort, I had ALLOT of red blood bleeding for almost two weeks but then turned brown. I have not had any bleeding since it stopped and my pregnancy has been going quite well since. So I hope you will all stop bleeding. Try to stay possitive even though I know its hard, especilly evertime you vist the bthroom, that was the worst. Also be sure to drink allot of water!!! being hydrated is very important my RE said.

Hugs !

Thanks Toobee...

I just had my u/s and my ob said is shrunk considerably! so much that it would be hard to find if he didn't know where to look. So I guess he was right about going off the baby aspirin.... anyway... just wanted to share as you were so nice to wish me well...

My Ob told me to put my feet up when i start bleeding until it changes to spotting. After that she told me no lifting, no exercise, no climbing too many stairs. The only thing she said i can do is walk:-) She said to follow this until i go thru two weeks of no spotting or bleeding..which of course has not happened.

I got off my projesterone suppositories on Sunday. I am checking every two minutes now. Getting to be so paranoid. Have not had a scan in two weeks and getting worried but i go in on friday. Will keep all of you posted. Hang in there everyone. We have been thru so much to get here that i know this too shall pass and we can begin to enjoy our pregnancies.

i had a subchorionic hematoma 2 nights ago, the clot came out right away, lots of bright red blood, scared the hell out of me. had 2 more gushes of red blood a few hours later at the ER....saw baby on u/s, looking strong..

very frightening. OBGYN says there's still a chance this could wipe out my pregnancy, but small. since i've only spotted brown, old blood, and not much, thank god. so i feel like it's over..as the clot came out... what do you think??

i'm glad i'm not alone with this. my situation sounds different from some of yours, but the fear is the same. i had just had an u/s a few days before this bleed and nothing was seen other than a healthy baby..and the clot was small, so i'm thinking it formed quickly and came out quickly, and i guess that's good? compared to other ways it could have gone.

ironically this happened the date of what was supposed to be my due date of my last pregnancy that i miscarried in june. yikes, i was very scared.
