Post by branda »

i'm 29 and DH 35. severe male factor. 1st IVF failed. Planing on 2nd IVf in Jan. 2009 with different Doctor. Doctor suggested using Donor sperm this time. my DH not very acceptable of using donor sperm. My question is has anyone used donor sperm before? what was the outcome? and how long did the whole process took?. Thank u all.

Hi Brenda

I haven't had to use donor sperm since it was an egg issue on my end. but I believe it is pretty easy to get donor sperm. I don't think there is a long waiting list like there is for donor eggs due to the fact that there are millions of sperm in each donation. I think after you pik out the donor the process is the same as a regular IVF.

I can understand why the DH is not acceptable of using a donor sperm. We all want to have out own biological children. I didn't want to use a donor egg myself. We got luck and got pregnant using my eggs even with the quality issue. If you do use donor sperm is this something that the DH would get over? Or could it cause more problems? You didn't say what the male factor was. have you tried ICIS? wishing you the best.

Brenda - I haven't had to use donor sperm myself, but my sister did. She got pregnant the first ivf cycle she used it. It is my understanding that you pay by how much information you want about the donor. My sister only wanted to know occupation, ethnic background, eye and hair color. She had frozen fertilized eggs left and unfortunately has not gotten pregnant again with those.

Just curious to know what the male factor is? As someone else asked, have you done icsi? Our situation was also male factor, dh had no sperm in ejaculate. He had to have a surgery to extract sperm (ouch!) and although what they got was a low low amount and poor motility, we got pregnant on the first ivf w/icsi try. With icsi, you only need one sperm for each egg and my dr said they don;t even need good motility b/c they get put right where they need to be, they just need to be alive. Good luck...if you go the donor sperm route, I am sure it will be easy to do. My dh also did not want to use donor sperm, so I understand you situation.

Our male factor is pretty bad too. We had one sample that only had 10,000 sperm total. But I was still able to get pregnant using ICSI. If it's an option, check into it!

DH and I were discussing donor sperm at one point. I know he was not thrilled about it but he was trying to consider it. From DH's perspective, just because he wasn't able to have a biological child didn't mean he wanted to deny me that possibility either.

Good luck!
