TOAL BEDREST !!!!!!

Post by Aida80 »

I got my HCG results today, 2 weeks after ICSI egg transfer as 565 IU

Now the doctor told me that I have to be in total bed rest having had a previous abortion from a natural pregnancy. on 27th of Jan I will be one month pregnant

She even told me to take sick leave from work for the first 2 months...

Can anyone out there assure me about how does bed rest work and how much activity is tolerated?

I am starting to get scared.. (I'm already on aspirin, progesterone)

I am a nurse in surgical unit.. (high work load but other nurses DO consider pregnant women)

Hi there!

Congratulations on your BFP! :D

It's the first time I hear that, after an abortion, IVF or not, someone has to be in total bed rest during the first trimester. Most doctors will tell you that, at this stage of your pregnancy, if your beanie(s) is/are meant to stick, they will. That, no matter if you wrap yourself in cotton, if your embryo(s) is/are not strong enough to survive, you will miscarry no matter how many precautions you take. I miscarried in April at 7 weeks with my first BFP and, believe me, a 5 days stay at the hospital and all the care in the world were not enough to save my baby, because he/she was just not meant to survive.

I'm also surprised that your doctor stopped your progesterone and aspirin. I was kept on estrogen, progesterone until week 12, and on aspirin until week 8. Some doctors make women stop progesterone towards week 5 if they had IVF and not FET (they count on the remaining follies to produce enough progesterone until your placenta is independent). Personally, I would be very uncomfortable with that kind of protocol.

It is quite inappropriate, on your doctor's part, to make you freak out that way. Anxiety and depressive symptoms are not good for you, or for your baby, and you should be very careful about that. I can imagine how going against your doctor's advice can add to the stress and insecurity. So I would advise you to call an ob-gyn and get a second opinion. My ob-gyn does not do IVF, but knows several colleagues who do. And on our first apt, she told us that, although she couldn't consider me as a high risk pregnancy, she could not consider me as a normal pregnancy either. So she took the middle way. My follow-ups have been 100% standard so far, and there has never been any question of bed rest at any point. I am very comfortable with that.

To most doctors, you wouldn't be any different than any woman who becomes pregnant after an abortion. A friend of mine had two abortions in her life, and she gave birth to a wonderful son a year and a half ago. There has never been any question of bed rest in her case, and she's closer to 40 than 30, if you know what I mean.

As for your work, call human resources. I work in a hospital and did just that when I became pregnant. They had precise guidelines for my kind of job, and they have even more detailed guidelines for nurses. For example, in our hospital, pregnant nurses have to work no more than 7 hours up until week 22; after that, it goes down to 5 hours (work = amount of time you spend standing on your feet). And so on. It's really worth a call.

Good luck my dear, and hang in there. Do get a second advice if your doctor doesn't convince you. Very few of us are doctors, and we can't replace the second opinion you might get. I know the first 12 weeks are difficult to get through, but I'm sending you lots of good vibes and keeping everything crossed for you.

Hugs,

Sophie

hi Sophie and thanx,,

Well I misspelled of=on.. I am still ON aspirin and cyclogest. At home I am trying to do the minimal amount of work and take rest, but once work starts, I can hardly tolerate sleeping all the time. Work keeps my occupied. We dont carry out hard labor and all other nurse are considerate.

I will try my best to pass my positive energy to the little ones. I will also go to the ob/gyn for a 2nd opinion.

She even told me that from now till march 27th, We are afraid of abortion. (Such an extended timeline for worries)

Thanx for the assurance

Hi there,

I think you also use the term "abortion" for "miscarriage", the two terms are very different. A miscarriage is the death of the baby before 24 weeks, and it is involuntary. An abortion is when the mom decides she wants the pregnancy to stop.

If you've had a miscarriage in the past, which is what I think you meant, then you're more or less in the same situation I was in. No one ever suggested me a bedrest because of one previous miscarriage. It's definitely worth a second opinion, because it would be too bad to stay in bed when it's not even needed, and worry all the time when it's not needed either.

Good luck!

Hi ladies,

There actually is a term called a "missed abortion". I'm not a big fan of it, but I heard it with my first pregnancy. It is basically used when the pregnancy is in the uterus but is no longer developing normally. (like an empty sac). From what I understand, they will only use this term if the cervix is closed. Personally I think the term stinks, but it's still out there.

Aida~ How long ago was the abortion? Were there any complications? That is the only reason I can really see your RE putting you on total bed rest. I agree with PMA. Get a second opinion, or simply ask your RE why he/she is putting you on the bed rest. Tell them to be specific. What are their concerns. What exactly are they trying to avoid?

Good luck.......keep us posted.

Spontanious abortion is another medical term for a miscarriage. I think it fell out of vogue because of the current association with the word. I myself suffered from a missed miscarriage and saw tons of literature referring to it as a missed abortion.

Whatever type of loss you're referring to though, having experienced just one, bedrest for the entire pregnancy sounds excessive to me. Like Sophie I've had one miscarriage and have heard no mention of bedrest because of it. Are there known issues with your uterus that make the bedrest necessary? Sophie's right, don't be afraid to seek out a second opinion on this one.

I actually had a missed abortion.. (No fetal pulse at 7 weeks) and that was in May 2008.

I'm still on the 4th day of receiving the good news of pregnancy and trying my best to sleep or lye down especially when I can. I will book an appointment in the early pregnancy clinic

Thanx ladies

You bet the term stinks! When I miscarried, doctors kept referring to it as either "abortion" or "spontaneous abortion". The medical term for the "other" type of abortion is voluntary pregnancy interruption. Still, everyone thinks of the latter when the term abortion is used, and it's especially tricky when you go through so much to get pregnant in the first place!

I finally got a second opinion,

My doc told me that if an embryo is meant to implant and live up to a full grown baby , it willl no matter what,,

she also told me that if there is any abnormality with the fetus, which in most miscarriages is the case, it has to be expelled from the body no matter what,,

I am relieved but she told me to slow my pace a bit , which I will surely do...
