HPT VS BLOOD TEST

Post by branda »

HI ladies, I called my RE today for advice and they told me that they do not believe in urine test because of the controversy they had with patients in the past and that blood test is more accurate. My Re told me that they have had patients who did HPT with 5times positve results, which turned out negative with blood test. Also, had patients with negative HPT with positive blood test. My Re is specialized on fertility only, with 25years experience, more expensive than my first failed IVF clinic.

I'm not trying to frighten anyone, but just want to know if anyone has ever heard such thing before?

please, kindly reply!

I am currently on the mar/apr cycle buddy thread on the ivf side of the board and some weird stuff has happened lately.

One lady went in for her beta and was told she was not pregnant. She had been doing hpt's at home and was getting positives and was shocked to hear this. When she told the clinic she had positive hpts, they repeated the beta and it came out positive. It may have been a possible lab error.

There is another lady who did an iui. She was told to do an hpt 2 weeks after insemination, and if it was negative, try again in 2 days and if it was still negative, then to stop progesterone and expect af to come. Well she got the 2 negatives, stopped her meds, and after a few days, still not aunt flo. So she had one hpt left and decided to try just for the heck of it, and it came out positive! She called the clinic, they did a blood test and it was two hundred and something, a bfp. She is now back on progesterone and pregnant.

The last one was really a miracle, and I am a little fuzzy on the details still. She got a bfp and was told it was ectopic. She stopped her meds and then had a surgery and found one had implanted in/around her intestine. Then she needed to have radiation for something and they did an u/s first and saw a black spot (a sac). They did a blood test and it was positive. Turns out the other one was a fighter and is now implanted in her uterus, it made it through anesthesia and all. Crazy story.

i just wanted to share and say, even though I have been on these boards for a long time, recently I have read about crazy stories such as these. I have always been an hpt user myself, just so I am prepared either way, and after reading these stories, I am even more of an hpt and blood test advocate. There could be mistakes either way and these stories prove it. I will do my hpts so I know what to expect, and even if I were to get a negative beta, I would even test with an hpt a couple days after just to be sure.

I do think the blood tests are more accurate. Anything over 5 for beta is considered pregnant but alot of hpts do not measure anything below 25, some even don't read until your beta is 50 or more. My first beta was only a 44, so if I depended solely on hpt's, It could have been way wrong. So i would do both and be happy you are getting a blood test. Good luck with everything.
