Acupuncture

Post by Eytbol8 »

I have heard good things about seeing an Acupuncturist while trying to get pregnant. Can anyone hear give me some info around the benefits of seeing an Acupuncturist while going through IVF? Thanks!

eytbol8 - I have done 3 fresh cycles and 3 FET. My 1st fresh produced my DD. With the next 4 cycles got all BFN's so I read the boards and asked about Accupuncture. With my 6th and final try I went to accupuncture treatments about 6-7 times including the day of transfer we got a BFP and are due in 16 more weeks. It was very relaxing but I also kept an open mind and had a PMA while going to treatments I really feel that it is what gave us our BFP.

Best of luck

Brenda.

I truly believe in acupuncture. My DH and I are currently 27 weeks pregnant with twins through IVF. You need good blood flow to produce many things including an inviting uterus ready to receive embryos- this is what acupuncture does. I did treatment prior to egg retrieval and then on the day of my transfer. Best of luck to you..

Multiple studies have shown acupuncture to have no effect on IVF outcome.

Did you guys tell the accupuncturist why it is you are seeking that treatment (ie, because of IVF?) Did they modify where they put the needles?

Thanks!

I went to an acupuncturist who specialized in fertility. Here is some research that I found.. keep in mind that everyone will have an opinion and you have to go with what suits you.

Marshall cites a 2002 German study suggesting that acupuncture may, in fact, work. The study looked at 160 women undergoing IVF, half of whom received acupuncture along with IVF, and the other half who received IVF alone. They found pregnancy rates among the women undergoing acupuncture were significantly higher.

It worked for me

I saw an acupuncturist for about 2 months (twice a week). I also had a session before and after transfer. It worked for me. Now I have a beautiful baby boy (8 months old).

I think it relaxes you but I could also tell a big difference in my body. I slept better at night and the injectables didn't make me sick (where before I was sick while on the medication).

I have been doing AP for a month done. Don't know if it is really working but I do know that I have slept a lot better. Plus this past AF was really heavy but I didn't get cramps like I normally do. I think it is all in what you believe in. I figured this is my last shot using my own eggs so I am going to try and do whatever it takes to get a BFP.

German study is positive but Washington study is negative

There was a good study done in the state of WAshington that not only showed acupuncture does not improve fertility rates with IVF, but actually decreased them. But that said, here are two things to note:
1) I am still doing acupuncture prior to and during my cycles. I like how I feel -- imore relaxed -- and that's always a good thing; and
2) it is almost impossible to study acupuncture as a whole, because the practice of it varies tremendously from practitioner to practitioner, and also when, where, and how it is done. In science talk, it is "impossible to replicate" a study.

Most of the recent randomized trials have found no benefit from acupuncture.

Sorry to say this, but infertile couples desperately struggling to achieve parenthood are a vulnerable group. Beware of "snake oil" salesmen. They are numerous.

I think the bottom line is, don't go into doing acupuncture thinking that miracles are going to happen to your body. Some say "Yes" they got PG while doing acupuncture but you never know if it was the acupuncture contributing, a new protocol. better eggs or just overall good luck. IMHO, if you want to relieve some stress, go for it, less stress is a good thing during a cycle. Just don't think that acupuncture is the cure all to getting your BFP.
