contemplating IVF

Post by wishfulthinking »

TTC 4 years
unexplained infertility

Just got home from the hospital today. Been told my best chance of pregnancy is IVF. I'd just like to know some info from anyone who has been through this. How many hospital appointments does it involve? How intrusive is it? etc. We are going to a fertility open evening in July to find out more but need info now. Can't stop thinking about it. Somehow hearing IVF mentioned seems to make it all the more real that we can't conceive naturally. Someone please tell me more.

I am talking in general here , not particular to any protocol. One IVF cycle usually involves 2 months duration. First you will be taking BCP's for two weeks and then your medications starts. You will be stimulated for at least 15 days with different kind of medications which also includes injections. You will be going in for appt and blood tests approx for every 1 or 2 days during this time. After the embryos reach required size(usually 16-22 mm) they will ask you to come in for retrieval which is around 2 hour process. You will be given anesthesia during this process. DH will also give his sperm this day. And they will combine embryos with sperm in the lab and they will wait for 3 days or 5 days for them to grow. When they are ready you will be asked to come in and they will transfer the embryos (usually 2 or 3 ). And you will continuing the required medication until your preg test which is after 2 weeks.

Good luck!
