AF while on Lupron?

Post by CT_Michele »

This is my first time using lupron. I am gearing up for an FET June 24th. I have been taking lupron since May 21, I stopped bcp's on the 26th and today af showed up. Is this normal? It makes sense getting my period a few days after stopping bcp's, but I guess I wasn't expecting it since I thought lupron was used to regulate and shut everything down??

It's normal.

When Lupron is started late in a cycle, it initially stimulates the pituitary, but continued use shuts it down, terminating LH support to your corpus luteum formed in that cycle. Thus progesterone production from the corpus luteum ends and AF follows.

When continued into and through the next cycle. Lupron shuts down the pituitary, preventing ovulation. In an FET cycle, this is used so they can carefully time your progesterone exposure prior to embryo transfer (your ovaries would start producing progesterone right after you ovulate, and it's more difficult to plan a cycle when this occurs at a random time). Once they start the progesterone supplements, the Lupron becomes unnecessary and is discontinued.

Thanks.

Lupron seems to be useful for almost anything. You can use it to stimulate ovaries or to shut them down, to cause ovulation or prevent it, some use it for luteal support, and a few are claiming it helps save the ovaries during cancer treatments. And I did not even list the FDA-approved uses.
