What prenatal vitamins are you using?

Post by MedStudentMom2B »

Just curious. Also, for those of you having twins, are you increasing the dosage? I know you require more folate for multiples.

Thanks!!!!

hey acornmom, i just want to clarify.. you are taking a prenatal (which already has folic acid) + DHA + additional 3mg daily of folic acid?

Right now I am taking 800mg of folic acid daily. Should I be taking more? My doc didnt say anything on our last visit.

Thanks!

sorry about that.
Yes, my prenate has folic acid in it (apparently it has a higher amount than most) then I take an additional 3 mg a day.

I will look when I get back home to see exactly how much they have in them.

So how have you been feeling. The kids have actively been playing "let's see when is the most inconvienent time to have nausea"

yeah I totally am getting the nausea. No vomiting yet though but I totally lost my appetite now and when I think of food, I get a horrible feeling in my stomach that makes me not want to eat. Although I know when I get hungry, it makes it worse so I end up just putting something in my mouth (ate a cookie at 5am this morning because I just could not sleep). Not the best feeling in the world obviously but I guess thats what we have to go through. :(

Thanks for looking up the info. I'll just end up taking the same amount of folate as you are since I wont see my doc until two weeks.

Thanks again!

OMG that is too funny. I was up at 3AM eating oreos and milk cause I couldn't sleep and decided since I wasn't nauseated I would take advantage of it. LOL

Mine just say "Prenatal 19". I'm told it has 1000mcg (1mg) of folic acid and a stool softner and are less harsh on your stomach. I also take an additional 1000mcg (1mg) of folic acid since it's twins.

Hey cymplicity,

Thanks for the info. I guess Im definitely not taking enough. Is Prenatal 19 prescribed by your doc or do you get it OTC?

Thanks!

I am 7weeks and my RE just told me that it would be ok to even take up to 5-6mg (5000-6000mcg) of Folic Acid every day. What my body doesn't use my kidneys just filter it out. So I take a vitamin with 800mcg + 6 extra 800mcg folic acid pills every evening for a total of 5600mcg.

Thanks Shelby,

Are you also having multiples? Is that why they are having you take so much?

Thanks!

MedStudenMom2B, the prenatal 19 was prescribed. My pharmacy ran out once and suggested an OTC brand to hold me over. They were horrible and I became so constipated! So I like the prescribed ones much better.

MedStudentMom2B - Only a singleton, but since the RE said there were studies to show that there were no adverse effects on me or the baby from taking more - up to 5-6mg, I decided what the heck. I'd rather have more than not enough. Actually, I started off taking less, then my DH reminded me of what the RE said and recommended that I take the extra. I'm awful at taking pills and the folic acid aren't coated so I figured a few more crushed in some apple sauce wouldn't be so bad.

Hi ladies, congratulations to you all.

We must do things differently in the UK, i just took the recommended allowance on the Folic Acid (with twins). I also found due to taking a blood thinner i could not take the pre natal multi vitamins, so i took no other supplements. I ate a healthy balanced diet lots of fruit and veg, and needed no extra vitamins or Iron throughout my pregnancy. I had no constipation or other problems.

Enjoy your pregnancy's.
