i was hoping that some of you could tell me your stories of OHSS. so far i have had two procedures to drain the fluid from my abdomen and it came back again! i have to go tomorrow for another procedure and possibly hosptialization b/c i'm not urinating enough. i'm scared! if i am pregnant how could i possibly stay pregnant through all of this? how long is this going to last? if HCG is triggering OHSS and it should keep rising with pregnance, then i'm doomed right (if i am pregnant)?
i was hoping any of you with experience with this could share your stories so i know what to expect. thanks in advance for your help.

Where are you at in your cycle? When did you trigger? When did you transfer, and what stage were the embryos?
Good news: OHSS has little or no impact on pregnancy, in fact, it correlates with a good outcome.
Even with a pregnancy, OHSS will eventually fade over a few weeks. However, you might ask your doctor about cabergoline. It seems to block the effect of VEGF in increasing vascular hyperpermeability. That hyperpermeability is the cause of OHSS. It's been used that way in Spain for years, and many clinics in the US are starting to use it.

hi,
i am having treatment in the uk. I have just had my 4th cycle of icsi. I was coasted for around 4 days after fsh injections because of ohss and high estradiol levels. Luckily they went down in time so we could go ahead with treatment, Immediately after ec I became very swollen and then one night my big tummy disappeared. However on approx day 8/9 after a 3day transfer the symptoms came back and got progressively worse so that I couldn't lay flat or on my side, nausea, severe cramps, back pain and tightness in chest and unable to stand up straight. I called the clinic almost daily but their response was very relaxed and they said t was normal as I had 15 eggs collected from 30 follicles. I ended up being admitted for tests as the dr said it was likely I was pregnant due to the return of symptoms on what would have been the day of implantation. At hospital my blood was taken and it was confirmed I was pregnant with a hcg level of 130 which I was told was very high considering I shouldn't have tested until the wednesday and it was a sunday! However. I was told that despite my symptoms my bloods were ok and didn' t have OHSS????? yet I looked 6 months pregnant and was told my ovaries were the size of small grapefruits.. I have not been scanned at all which is quite worrying and am now 5 wks and 3 days pregnant which is fantastic. Today has been the first day that I have been out of the house and able to walk more than a hundred yards so it eels like i'm improving. Is this a bad sign??
i'm quite confused regarding ohss and my symptoms and my clinics lack of concern or monitoring. I was told that i was unlikely to develop ohss at that point if i hadn't already (at hospital admission on 25/09/11 13 days post 3 day transfer) but i still look 6 months pregnant and am in pain but after all that's said and done I am so happy and hoping that I get to my scan on the 12th and that I see a heartbeat (or two!!)
I'm not an expert but I am a nurse and persinnaly suffered from OHSS myself. The hospitals sometimes are just not well trained in IVF and all that comes with it. With that said, they are absolutely incorrect in yelling you that you ate unlikely to develope OHSS because you are 3 days post transfer. Most prudent IVF doctors will cancel a cycle an freeze all embryos if there are strong signs of OHSS. A really knowledgable IVF doctor can tell you that you are actualy more likely to develoe OHSS after transfer especially if you get pregnant. I wish you all the beat. I am over o. The Fall/Wintwr Board and you ate morethan welcome to join us over there or ask additional questions. I wish you all the best.

It is entirely possible to develop OHSS after coasting, especially with 30 follicles. There is little or no good evidence that coasting reduces OHSS risk at all.
Your blood test probably did not meet the criteria for OHSS. But you described other symptoms.

thanks for the replies! i guess what i have is a mild form of ohss that isn't affecting my hormone levels and therefore wasn't picked up with the blood tests. I was also prescribed metformin prior to starting this cycle by the clinic, in order to prevent ohss which i developed on my last cycle prior to ec and also was coasted. maybe this helped i'm actually starting to feel much better except for the vomiting which i'm hoping is more to do with the pregnancy than anything else. I am also taking painkillers for the abdominal pain which is quite severe at times but less persistent at the moment (except for the middle of the night when it tends to wake me up). anyway, good luck everyone and i hope all of our dreams come true xxx

On my first cycle of Ivf that already went wrong after egg retrieval.
I am experiencing hell at the moment. I was drain 2 times from the fluids and it came back again. I have been in ill for almost 2 weeks. I have been in the hospital for 7days. Actually i was ill before process and got worst after the egg retrieval. It has been literally a hell ride. I am asking God when will this be over! Cant eat, sleep, crap, pee, move or breath without help.
