Ghost...Second Beta

Post by CT_Michele »

I posted to you on monday when I had my first beta of 5 (13dt3dt FET). They had me repeat today to make sure there wasn't a lab error. My second one came back at 13. Even though it more than doubled, they told me to stop progesterone. They said they have never seen such a low first set of numbers make it to a viable pregnancy. They said it would most likely be abnormal or ectopic.

I know those are both possibilities, but is there hope? I was shocked to see that increase, and I just feel like I can't give up yet. They told me I could continue if I want, so I am on my way to get more progesterone from them and they will repeat the blood test on monday.

Just wanted your opinion.

I've seen many hundreds of pregnancies, including more than a hundred with very low hCG values, and have never seen one that low make it to live birth. But that does not prove it's impossible.

Your doctor is correct that the chance of this being a viable pregnancy is very low.

You can ask your doctor if he will let you continue progesterone and test again in a few days. But ectopics are associated with low and slow hCG cruves, and he's correct to be wary of that possibility.

3rd beta today...32, a perfect increase. The clinic changed their tone a bit and said I have a fighting chance. Just thought I would let you know, and see what you think.

Monday is next beta, and then she said, depending on numbers, they will look toward an u/s, (probably not next week, but the week after).

So how are you feeling about all of this. Don't be lifting Ella right now. I know that's hard but don't do anything to jeopardize a good thing. I'll continue to pray that your numbers increase.

I have my consult on Tuesday and will let you know what our plans for proceeding will be.

I'm so happy for you right now!!!

Thanks Doreen. I am conflicted, confused and don't know what to think. I am shocked and amazed, but still know this could end badly. I am definitely not drinking at the wedding I am going to tomorrow and I might not even do the electric slide! I don't want to risk a thing! Not lifting Ella is tough, but she is still light enough I don't think it matters too much, I just try and take extra caution on how I lift her.

Good luck at your consult on Tuesday. Make sure you let me know how it goes, and I will of course update you after I get more numbers on Monday!

I'm glad you stuck by it. Your clinic is obviously watching for any issues that might arise. Best of luck.

I really don't mean to be a downer, but PLEASE make sure you stay in a doctor's care and report any type of bleeding or pain. The reason I mention this is, like you, I had the same type of low #s that did double every couple of days after an IUI last spring. It ended up being an ectopic. I had no bleeding and no pain...until I had an u/s around 6w. After the u/s, I left the office and started feeling pain. I ended up going to the hospital that day and had a laparoscopy to remove the pregnancy from my right tube the next day. They never saw it in the u/s. They had to go in laparoscopically and, while they were in me checking things out, they saw the ectopic and removed it. Luckily, it didn't rupture my tube and all was okay.

So, there is still hope and, like I said, I don't mean to be a downer. But PLEASE report anything odd you might feel to be sure nothing catastrophic happens.
