Ghost - very high beta number

Post by BRMommy2B »

Ghost,

We transferred one frozen 5 day embryo 10 days ago. We had our beta this morning, and it came back at 425.

I (in all of my IVF craziness) thought that sounded high, and did some internet searching of beta numbers. There was one site that listed by number everyone's beta numbers according to the transfer day and dpt, and I'm significantly higher that all singletons at that point.

What could this mean? Is there any bad side to a high beta?
Me: 29
DH: 32, Male Factor
4 Failed IUI
IVF #1 - BFN
FET #1 - BFP!!! DD born Sept 2010
IVF #2 - Chemical
Next: Work on improving DH and my fertility while saving up for next round. Why does something that we want so badly have to also be so expensive?

425 does not sound all that high to me, but I'd say that, if you'd had more than one transferred, that 425 is more consistent with a multiple than a single. I'd bet we have seen singles higher than 425, but I'm not certain of that.

Yes, there can be a down side to very high hCG at this point. In very rare cases it may result from a molar pregnancy. My clinic has never seen one of those to my knowledge (in many thousands of cycles), and I have seen many "betas" that were much higher than yours. Moles are very rare.

Chance of a strong singleton pregnancy is high.
Chance of a monozygotic twin is low. Maybe 2% or so.
Chance of a mole is very low. Much less than 1%.

The ultrasound is much more definitive than hCG measurements.

A friend of mine had one egg split so she ended up with twins, I wonder if maybe this could have happened? But I have also seen higher numbers then yours on this board end up as a singleton or much lower then that end up with twins. So you never know. Now you have that lonnngggg wait till your first ultrasound to know for sure. But either way congrats on being preggers!!!

Ghost and Army Wife:
Thanks for your responses. It is going to be a long two weeks. I'm having some minor cramping (have had since Monday, so I think it's uterus expanding), and just got back from a wedding reception. Had the slightest of spotting, which I don't even think I would have noticed if it wasn't for all those Endometrin suppositories that leak out all day long (TMI, I know). Is this normal in early pregnancy?

Spotting is very common.

Report everything to your clinic promptly.

I transferred 1 Day 5 embie and my first beta 10dpt came back 414. I am pregnant with identical twins in 2 separate sac's. It is possible the egg split:) Do you want multiples? I know in my case, I did not and that is why I only put in 1 embie. I am just getting used to the idea of multiples, at first I was very anxious. Good luck, let us know how your first u/s goes. There were able to see the 2 sac's at my first u/s at 5 weeks, confirmed hb's at 7 weeks.

Ghost: Thanks, I feel better. My husband, who I've been showing a lot of posts to, said last night, "Yall are so lucky to have Ghost on there! Such an awesome resource for everyone going through this." I agree with him, we're very lucky!!! Thanks again!

Riki: We would be thrilled with one, or thrilled with twins! The idea of more than twins worries me mainly because of the added risk to the pregnancy. I'm going back in the morning for my second beta at 8:15 am CST, so I'm praying that it keeps progressing as it should. According to your dates I could have an ultrasound at the end of the week! I'll keep you posted.

Thank you all for your responses. We're trying to be "cautiously optomistic", but the cautious part is hard!!!

First off, I had spotting all along with the prog. inserts. The RE did not have any concern since it is common with the inserting. Also I had noticable bright red spotting the night before my beta and felt all was doomed, but ended up with a BFP. I also had a very high beta and only 1 embie put in. My beta was 960 13dp5dt. The nurse moved up my u/s to check for multipules. However when I went the tech said they could not tell mult at that time since it would be 2 embies in 1 sac and at that time they are looking for a sac and maybe a yok.

Have fun waiting, but I wouldn't worry too much about it being 2. In my research that beta is not too high for 1.

Congrats on the great BFP!

I too thought I had a very high first beta - 403 at 11d/6d transfer- but it's only a singleton. In retrospect I figure that just meant things were very good. :) And I did spot (dark brown) up until I went off the progesterone. I think you are off to a good start!
