No heartbeat

Post by amanda »

Ladies,

Today we went for our first 6 week scan and guess what no heartbeat. On average, there should be a heartbeat at 6 weeks, but thats like saying the average height is 5foot 5inches - we all know there are people walking around taller and smaller than the average. The scenerio therefore is that "baby|" is growing slowing or he has stopped growing altogether. Confirmation does not happen until Mond 30th Dec. We are positively devasted. Christmas is going to be awful. In many ways I would have prefered if they had said definately no or not scanned till after New Year.

I am so upset I can think straight. Oh why, oh why did this have to happen? We have waited so long for this pregnancy, I cant believe my chance has gone.

Please, please if this has happened to anyone, post a message.

Thank you.

Amanda

Hi Amanda,
I am waiting to start ICSI in January so can not speak from experience. However, when we went to the clinic to be told about everything, the nurse did say that the 6 week scan would not definately show a heartbeat and that is why they then do an 8 week scan. I know this isn't going to make you feel any easier but i hope it puts your mind at ease a little (says me, the worlds worst worrier).
take care and rest and let us know how you get on with your next scan.
Becky x

Hi Amanda
I had exactly the same thing - I had my 6 week scan on the 6th December and although there was a sac, there was no heartbeat. I was devastated and very worried.
I was asked to go back a week later (Friday 13th) and had another scan, and they detected a heart beat, and measured the baby and said it was normal for 7 weeks.
During the wait for the second scan, I went back through this site and checked all the pregnant ladies ec dates, and test dates and realised I was at least 5 days behind people who were having their first scan (so they were actually more like 7 weeks than 6 weeks at their first scan). This gave me some comfort...but I was still worried until the 7 week scan.
But I also read on a pregnancy calender website that you cannot always detect the heartbeat at 6 weeks, and that it was much more likely to be at 7 weeks.
Hopefully this has given you some comfort.
Take care
Tina

Hi Amanda

I knowits hard but dont panic. One of my friends had ICSI and had her 6 week scan, it showed 1 baby with a heartbeat and the other didnt. They said she might abort the one that didnt make it...she was so worried (the scan was at 6w 2d). She went back for another scan at 10 weeks and there it was....2 strong heartbeats!!. I also have another friend that had a scan at 6w and they could even see a baby, just a sac...8 week scan showed a healthy baby.

My thoughts are with you and wish you all the luck for the rest of your pregnancy.

Love Natxx

Oh thank you, thank you - your words of encouragement have helped a great deal. We have arranged for a private scan on Friday 27th Dec with another hospital (our hospital cannot do because they close down over christmas period). Its not much earlier, but its better than nothing. Cant stop the sinking feeling though.

Thank once again.

Amanda

Amanda
I've been thinking about you and am wondering how you got on with your second scan. I'm in exactly the same position and am going for my second scan today - though agree with you and can't help the sinking feeling. At least I will know one way or another soon and can get on with things (that sounds brave and I'm not actually feeling at all brave).
Praying everything is well for both of us.
Love, Michelle x
