miyaya - Hi, have a couple of questions for you, hope you don't mind me asking ? I am wondering if I have PCOS and wondered how you were diagnosed with it ? What symptoms you had if any ? I see you did have a child with PCOS was it hard to conceive then ? Did your PCOS get worse to need IVF ? Hope you don't mind me asking so many questions, I really don't know anyone who has it to ask :D I have gained a ton of weight and RE always look @ my ovaries and say there are many follicles, my b/c fsh/Lh was off. I hyperstim during IVF and say I look like a pcos pt and react to the drugs like one  Just curious wink: .

hi Jenice

Hi Jenice~ I almost missed your post! To answer your questions, I was diagnosed based on a few things....

1. I had always had irregular periods. I never got them actually. So I knew when it came time for TTC I would have a hard time.

2. I noticed when I was around 27 or so I had a hard time losing extra pounds I had gained during the holidays or whatever....I had always been tiny but noticed that was not the case anymore and the pounds were slowly coming on.

3. I noticed I started having adult acne...and some chin hairs (yucky)

So I went to my OB and they did b/w. Of course my fsh and tsh were a bit off suggesting possible PCOS. However with my other symptoms my doctor deducted that was my diagnosis. He explained PCOS to be a Syndrome and symptoms can vary from person to person.

After 3 rounds of clomid with my doc, we moved on to and RE...they did an u/s to confirm the multiple cysts (small follies) on my ovaries like a pearl necklace. They were a bit opaque in color as well.

So that is pretty much how it went for me.

From when I started with my OB to conception of my child, it was about 3 years. However, It was only about 6 months after starting with my RE. I was lucky, we got preggars with him on my third and final round of clomid and metformin....we were prepared to do IVF. Now, TTC#2 has been harder for us. Not sure why....they had high hopes but nothing yet. I did 3 more clomid cycles, 3 follistim cycles and am now on my second IVF....I think its b/c of my age....not that I am old but after 30...every minute counts.

PCOS is a PITA! Sorry, excuse my language but it is....as if IF all together. I honestly think good results come with a good RE and some serious luck! Are you on metformin? If yes, what is yoru dose? When you hyperstim, what is yoru dosing? I wish you so much luck. It can happen...hang in there and PM me anytime with any questions....

sorry to jump in!!

Jenice my ould cycle buddy i was only diagnosed with pcos after 6 rounds of ivf and changing clinics. It showed up on a saline infusion scan, i have absolutly No symptoms at all, i weigh and have always weighed about 112 pounds, regular periods, no pains or anything. I have been on metformin 500mg 3 times daily (yuk!!) since December to hopefully improve my egg quality. I always had 20+ follies but only about 9 eggs get retrieved but they reckon it was the pcos that caused it. I did 6 cycles with my old clinic and they never diagnosed it but there the little buggers were in all there glory on a more detailed scan!

miyaya - Thanks for responding, I just went to a new RE who did put me on gluchopage twice daily. Still not sure if I have PCOS but am dieting and losing weight :D I have to wait after my glucose testing to take the meds though. Did you think the glucophage helped with losing weight ? Does it put your hormones in balance cause of the decreased insulin production ? I hope it helps me. Thanks again for answering my :?: I hope you succeed for #2. That is what I'm trying to do too

Gi - How are you ? Did you go for your surgery ? BTW, I'm seeing new RE who seems on the ball. RE is :?: my DH is taking Lipitor which could cause problems with his sperm, could be one extra problem that was overlooked  I also have had 5 surgeries all abdominal, thinking scar tissue could be a possible problem  I would like to do IVF through this new RE and is alot cheaper than most. RE gives packages like I have never seen before :D Good luck to you Gi, it is amazing how things are looked @ differently when you see a new RE !!!!!!

Pcos

Post by T3 »

Pcos is a diagnosis of exclusion. Meaning many different things can cause similar symptoms like hypothyroid, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hyperprolactin, cushing syndrome etc.. Your doc has to get steriod levels secreted by pituitary like fsh/LH, adrenal steroids, and ultrasound to exclude other diagnoses. You can't be stimulated when doing the ultrasound cuz they all look very similar on US. The only way to definately diagnose is do biopsy, but most doc will not do that. Clinical features, labs, and US can often make the diagnosis. Hope this helps
