Our daughter, who was an adopted embryo, will turn 6 on Tuesday. I have been looking for a way to start the conversation with her about how she came to our family, but it is such a challenge; the truth is far too technical and complicated for her to comprehend -- more nuanced on many levels than talking to a young child about adoption. Yet she clearly sees that her features are different from others' in our family, and she has every right to know her story -- a story that we love and cherish.
I have not found good children's books to use for starting this conversation. There are good books about adoption, but not to my knowledge about surrogacy or embryo donation/adoption.
I do not have any advice on recourses, but we just had our first child through embryo donation. If you find anything out there, please pass on the info. I would love to hear about your conversation with her and how you approach it. This is something I think about a lot. I don't know how or when we are going to try to tell him. What made you decide on doing it now? Thanks for any input.
