What week does your clinic do a first u/s?

Post by DandMe »

Just kinda curious and trying to pass the time... my clinic doesn't give first ultrasounds until 7 weeks. Anyone else want to share?

Sonya - I had my first u/s at 5w4d and he saw one sac and a "dot"
he did the second on 6w3d and saw the HB - lots of clinics wait until at least 6 wks though, if yours is waiting til 7 wks its because they want to be totally sure that they see the HB, sac, pole at the first u/s - I know its hard to wait, but its so close now, hang in there honey - xoxo

Hi Sonya,

Congrats on your BFP! I think we did our first IVFs at the same time this winter (I had a chemical). Anyway, I now have a BFP too, and my U/S will be at 6 weeks exactly. My nurse told me to make an appt any day the week of July 26, which would be anywhere from 5 weeks 6 days to 6 weeks 3 days - I made it for Tuesday, so it will be 6 weeks ono the dot. I've seen people go in early and see a sac and have to go back for the heartbeat - hopefully that won't happen to either of us!

We do the first at 5.x weeks (sometimes 4.9), another at 6.x weeks, and usually two others around 8 and 10 weeks.

The first one sees the sac(s). The second sees the heartbeats. Together, those two confirm it's not ectopic or heterotopic.

That's interesting... and would be nice to see things progress like that. I'm going to google heterotopic. I keep thinking that since I am having ms and am so tired that things are progressing. In reality I know all I can do is wait and see.

Hi Jean; Yes I remember... I had a blighted ovum... and this is my FET - was this a fresh or frozen for you? I'm kind of jealous about the early u/s everyone has - so far I'm the latest I've ever heard of. I'm 6w2d and it's kinda hard to wait since we've had such a long journey. LOL I guess it's for the best so we'll know for sure what is happening in there. Congrats on your new pregnancy I hope everything goes great. :!:

Thanks Katie - you're such an inspiration. :) It's been a really long journey and I have high hopes. I have been great with the waiting until just today.. seems like we're in the home stretch for the answer now. This week will be filled with keeping myself busy, busy busy.

Heterotopic means one or more in the uterus and one or more not in the uterus (usually in the tubes). The intrauterine pregnancy usually cannot be saved in these cases.

It will be the 1st of August before I get an U/S. That will make me 7 weeks and 3 days. I have an appointment tomorrow for my 2nd Beta I am 5 weeks and 2 days and have only had one beta test. I am going to ask tomorrow whether I can have some more appointments to check betas and U/S. I think it should be up to what we want to keep our minds at ease when we have been through so much. It is very different falling pregnant quickly and naturally compared to the years we have waited and the turmoil we have been through!!

Hi Sonya -

Yes, I read about your blighted ovum and am so sorry. I think it's probably easier to handle a BFN than to get further along and get your hopes up and then have them dashed. I was grateful my chemical was pretty obvious from the start, and didn't drag on for too long.

This was a fresh cycle for me. I had the chemical with the fresh in Jan/Feb (single embryo transfer), then BFN with 2 FETs. This latest was a fresh since I ran out of frozens. I have an almost 3-yr old and did single embryo transfers until this last cycle where I did 2 blasts, and now I'm afraid I'm probably pregnant with twins (first beta at 8dp5dt=117 and second beta at 10dp5dt=282), so I'm very eagerly awaiting my U/S!

The numbers are good but remember you can't tell a lot from them - I've seen twins from low numbers and singles from stupidly high numbers! You'll get to see soon enough. Sorry about the two bfn's - hopefully this makes up for them. I've read that the chance of miscarriage goes down a lot once you hit six weeks. I find a lot of comfort in that exept I know that often times you don't spot or cramp until long after things aren't working out. Ugh.

I'm actually a little unclear as to how a miscarriage shows up if you've done IVF. Doesn't the progesterone basically prevent you from bleeding? And if so, how do you know you're miscarrying?

Progesterone will generally stave off full-flow menses, but breakthrough bleeding is common in IVF pregnancies. It usually does not signal a miscarriage.

You raise a good point that progesterone can sustain a pregnancy that should be lost. For example, an anembryonic gestation (aka "blighted ovum", a developing amniotic sac with no fetus inside) just might continue for a long time. But once these are confirmed on ultrasound, the progesterone is discontinued and they are then expelled.
