Vanishing Twin? Experiences?

Post by riogirl71 »

Hi! I wanted to see if there is anyone out there with a similar story and a happy healthy pregnancy of a singleton now.

We transfered 4 embryos at 3 days, at 5w4d we saw one gestational sac. At 6w4d we saw two heartbeats, the one baby was measuring 6w4d and the other 6w3d so right on the mark. At our US at 7w5d the one twin had no heartbeat anymore. The other baby measured fine and had a good heartbeat. I am waiting to go to my US at 8w4d on Thursday. I never experienced any bleeding or cramping or any sign that anything was wrong. My OB said that the baby will be absorbed and that the other baby will be fine.

I was hoping to hear from other women who went through the same thing. Did you cramp or bleed? Is your remaining singleton doing fine? How did you deal with it emotionally? Did you get to see a healthy heartbeat and measurements before the twin vanished?

Thank you!!!!!!!!!

Rio – I am so sorry to read that you could be losing a twin. I did experience a vanishing twin in 2008; unfortunately, I ended up losing both babies as you can see by my signature. I lost the first twin at 6 ½ weeks and my daughter Ashley at 21 weeks. But, the really good news is that I really think your other twin will be just fine … my other twin would have survived too if I would have had a decent OB instead of an idiot who didn’t pay attention to my symptoms when I described them to him. I have personally met several women who have experienced a vanishing twin and their other twin was just fine!

With my experience, I started spotting dark blood about 5 ½ weeks and then the cramping started, so I immediately knew something was wrong. I was put on bed rest/pelvic rest for a week but the bleeding continued and then turned bright red. Finally, my RE had me come in for an early u/s and sure enough they said I was suffering from a vanishing twin but my daughter Ashley was progressing just fine! I continued to bleed for about 2 or 3 weeks off and on and then all of sudden it stopped and she continued to grow. Then everything went to he** when I transferred to my regular OB; I should have been with a high risk OB because of my history because my OB just didn’t know what to do with me. I definitely learned my lesson with this past pregnancy and I was with a high OB from the beginning and I finally had my dream come true and my daughter was born a little over two weeks ago! I wish you good luck and be sure to take it easy as much as possible especially if you start to spot.

Great news! The baby is doing wonderful. S/He measured at 9 weeks and we are 8w4d so s/he is growing beautifully and has a great HB (OB doesn't measure it, but he has seen thousands so he said it was very strong). Baby B is still at 7w size and no heartbeat. My OB reassured me that everything looks fine. Finally to have a non-shocking US was wonderful, I am so happy and what a great Xmas gift!

Thank you so much for all of you thoughts, prayers and support! I am very thankful for you!

Hello Rio and all...
I just had the same thing happen... Baby B had been 2-3 days behind and stopped growing at 7w4d... Baby A is on track at 8w2d...
My Dr now wants to do another US in two days to make sure A is still fine...
What are the chances of loosing both??

It's so wierd... I'm crying for B but feel bad because I should be only happy for A...

My first son comes from a pregnancy where there was a vanishing twin. The twin in that pregnancy did not cause any complications. I did not miscarry it, it just reabsorbed. It is complicated emotionally. You do grieve for the one that does not make it, but you are grateful for the one who did. The one thing to remember is that it has nothing to do with what you did or didn't do, it is something that sometimes happens probably due to chromosomal reasons. It probably happens much more often than people realize because we know we are pregnant so early and have early ultrasounds and we know there were twins. Most people don't know that there was an early twin that "disappeared".

I second what mamaboo s statement that it is very complicated emotionally. Our vanishing twin disappeared and will always live in our hearts. Our baby girl is very healthy, no complications. It is better that it happens early if it is going to happen and as hard as it is a singleton pregnancy is safer. Congrats on your healthy baby and sorry for twinsie.

I also had a vanishing twin. We found out there was no heartbeat for sure around 8 weeks. The sac was still showing on the ultrasound at 12 weeks and then I had light bleeding around 13-14 weeks that my doctor thought was probably the vanishing twin. We're soon to have the 20 week ultrasound and I'm curious what we'll see.
