Vanishing Twin? Experiences?

Post by riogirl71 »

Hi! I wanted to see if there is anyone out there with a similar story and a happy healthy pregnancy of a singleton now.

We transfered 4 embryos at 3 days, at 5w4d we saw one gestational sac. At 6w4d we saw two heartbeats, the one baby was measuring 6w4d and the other 6w3d so right on the mark. At our US at 7w5d the one twin had no heartbeat anymore. The other baby measured fine and had a good heartbeat. I am waiting to go to my US at 8w4d on Thursday. I never experienced any bleeding or cramping or any sign that anything was wrong. My OB said that the baby will be absorbed and that the other baby will be fine.

I was hoping to hear from other women who went through the same thing. Did you cramp or bleed? Is your remaining singleton doing fine? How did you deal with it emotionally? Did you get to see a healthy heartbeat and measurements before the twin vanished?

Thank you!!!!!!!!!

In March 2009, I underwent an FET. I was originally pregnant with twins. At around 7 weeks, Baby A measured appropriately and had a good heartbeat that we listened to. Baby B measured about a week behind and had a heartbeat, but it could only be seen on the ultrasound and not heard. At about 8 weeks, B had shrunk to about a 5 week size. When I was about 12 weeks along, Baby B was still around and could still be seen on ultrasound, however, it never progressed any further. The second baby was not mentioned when I had an ultrasound at 21 weeks. I never had any bleeding and my RE reassured me since it was not in the same sac as Baby A there was minimal likelyhood that it would affect it adversly. I had a healthy baby the day before his due date by C-section due to gestational diabetes. I was and am sorry that Baby B didn't make it. However, I am immensely thankful for my son.

In our first successful IVF, we originally had two embryos, the smaller measuring around a week behind the larger. I think the smaller made it to a 6 week measurement or so. It then disappeared over the next few weeks. I don't think there was any cramping or bleeding; it just got resorbed. We would have loved to have had twins, but we're extremely happy with the beautiful daughter we got.

In our second successful IVF, there were two sacs, but the second never developed an embryo, so it wasn't really a vanishing twin.

I have never actually faced this situation (bleeding or cramping) and even don't have any experience with twins but I can understand the emotions and problem which you all have faced. I know that its really difficult situation and sometimes it becomes worse when you see things turning bad.
