New to IVF

Post by sheluvzya »

Hmmm where to start.

Im 23 years of age and my Husband is 28, we are looking to start our first cycle of IVF once I have lost the weight required by the NHS.
Unfortunately my Husband had to undergo treatment for Leukemia at a very young age and as a result of this, has very little live sperm.
Im new to the forum and was wondering if anybody has any helpful advice as I have lots of worries and my Husband suggested trying a forum and speaking to like minded people who have been through what I am going through prior to starting the treatment.

Any info would be very much appreciated :-)

Hi

Sorry to hear about your problems and need for IVF. I agree with your husband that a forum is a great idea. This forum has been a great help to me over the last couple of years and full of information.
I also had treatment on the NHS and was very lucky in getting 2 free cycles, the second of which worked.
The most I can advise is get on the waiting list asap before any more cuts (N Yorks has already cut many cycles), read up about it and ask your nurses and doctors lots of questions. When you are doing your cycle try and stay as relaxed as possible and not read something into nothing and try not to panic. Talk to the people on here with your concerns and they always help.
Good luck to you and your husband

Thanks very much for that Ange, I think its just going to help talking about it....I am such a massive needle phobe too but like the hubby says, I will do it if I want to get pregnant.
I think its just the fear of the unknown at the minute - im not keen on our consultant and am thinking of asking to change. We have been told we get 3 free cycles via St Marys in Manchester but I am worrying about the cuts too.

Congratulations on the 2nd cycle working :)

sheluvzya - Welcome to the board. I believe lots of gals on here have had needle phobias before beginning IVF. The needles really are not that bad. The PIO shots are the worst because of the huge needle but once the skin is pierced, I really don't notice the size of the needle. You'll get a few bruises here and there but it is well worth it if your cycle works. Good Luck to you!!

3 free cycles is great. In Hull we get 2 fresh and a frozen if you have blastocysts (5 day embryos) to freeze, in Leeds its 1 fresh 1 frozen but in York they currently say none apparntley.

I lost lots of weight too before my cycle with slimming world, its the best incentive I ever had!

Welcome Shel! Trust me, you will "meet" lots of wonderful, helpful and supportive people here! Some of the people I met on here I have met in real life. Others I have stayed very close with and they understand me better than my own friends and family. Most people can really not understand what we ivf'ers go through unless you have experienced it yourself.

Talking about IVF has helped me tremendously. I am open and honest about it hoping that even if my knowledge, much of it acquired through this forum, can help even one person, then it was worth talking about.

Good luck to you in IVF and weight loss. I was successful on a low carb diet. I was also a needle phobe a long time ago. You'll get over it.

Welcome Shel! I wish I would have found this forum the first time we tried IVF. I didn't find it until our 3rd attempt, which worked. The girls on here are great and it is so nice to have someone to talk to who knows what you are going through because my family and friends just didn't get it. I still hate needles! You would think after all the pokes it would be no big deal. Luckily for me, my husband gave them to me. I just closed my eyes and would hold on to a chair or the oven handle (we did them in the kitchen) and let him shoot me. I was on suppositories for progesterone so I didn't have to do the PIO.

I also lost weight before we started IVF. I was pre-diabetic and my OB told me I would have a very high chance of developing gestational diabetes. I ended up losing 68 pounds. I did it the old fashion way, watching what I ate and working out. It wasn't easy but worth it and I'm so happy now that I did it. It makes things much easier and I'm having an easier time not gaining a ton of weight with this pregnancy, so far. Good Luck!

My newly wed friend has the same problem. They are afraid because they think that they can't have a child because the guy has leukemia. That is the reason why he has a low count of sperm.
