question about short cycles...ghost / anyone???

Post by brit1612 »

On another forum I came across someone saying: they wish they would have known that having 24 day cycles was associated with peri-menapause and possibly poor egg quality. Here is my situation. I was 23 when I started IVF(we were said to have MF infertility) but I never responded well to the meds. The doc even commented that he was going to put me on the protocol he uses for his 40+ patients. At this time my periods were exactly 28 days apart every month.

Eventually we turned to donor embryos and had our miracle little boy. Since having him 13 months ago my periods have been consistant, but they are no longer 28 days. They have been early almost every month since. Is this normal after having a child? Should I be concerned that I may go through menopause early? ( I am only 27, so I shouldn't even be close yet!)
After 7 attempts (2 negatives/3 miscarriages), we have TWO miracle boys!! If you would like to hear our story, please visit http://www.ivfsuccessstories.info. Never give up, it can happen for you!!

You may want to get a current ovarian reserve test. Your posts suggests a potential for premature ovarian failure. It's not normal for a 27 year old to need donor eggs or excessive stimulation. The short cycles are another hint.

We actually used donor embryos. I was told that my egg quality was good and that my hubby's sperm was probably causing the poor embryo quality. We went through three miscarriages before having a child with the donor embryos. We are planning on using the rest of the donor embryos to try for number two, so my egg quality won't matter in that sense. Would just like to know if there is something for me to be concerned about? Thanks ghost!

When sperm quality is the issue, it's much more usual to use donor sperm than donor embryos. Donor embryos are usually used as a cheap form of donor egg cycles.

But we still have your need for more FSH than what your doctor expected, and your shortening cycles.

Your right the doc did recommend using donor sperm, but my husband was not sure if he was comfortable with it. For some reason he was ok with the donor embryos. I think because we would have the same relationship to the child. When we try for number two using the donor embryos will these issues affect anything? Thanks again for always being so willing to answer al the questions!

If your ovaries are diminishing, that would have no impact on your chance of success with donated embryos. The uterus can be reliably made to work well for many years after menopause.

It would mean your future fertility treatments would necessarily be donor egg or donor embryo. It would also mean early menopause and the effects that go with it.

Of course, we don't know this yet. I suggested you might want to test for it.

Thanks ghost- should I see my obgyn about this or my fertility specialist?

I had 28 day cycles before having my little boy. After having him my cycles have been consistently shorter, 24-25 days. With only a couple "normal" cycles sprinkled in.

I would prefer to see an RE about it. They are more focused on this. But sometimes insurance covers the ob/gyn and not the RE, so that might affect the choice.
