It has been 11 years of my marriage. I am 31 years old trying to conceive for 3-5 years now. I was diagnosed as suffering from endometriosis. In this context kindly clarify and advice me.

[Infertility]

About 30% of women with endometriosis experience infertility. Endometriosis is a common disease affecting women in their reproductive years. The name refers to endometrium, the tissue that lines the cavity of the uterus, builds up and sheds each month in the menstrual cycle. In endometriosis, tissue similar to the endometrium occurs outside the uterus in other areas of the body. These tissue growth, or implants, can cause pain, infertility, and other problems. The most common location for endometriosis implants are the pelvic area involving the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the ligaments supporting the uterus, and the area between the vagina and the rectum[the “cul de sac”]. The outer surface of the uterus, and the lining of the pelvic cavity. These endometrial growths usually respond to the hormones of the menstrual cycle, so they build up tissue each month, break down and then cause bleeding. This process results in inflammation of the surrounding areas and the formation of scan tissue. The scar tissue can eventually distract he anatomy of the pelvis and interfere with normal reproductive functions. Endometriosis may affect egg and embryo development and hamper the movement of egg or sperm.

Symptoms of Endometriosis :- Include pelvic pain before and during menstrual periods or sexual activity, infertility, heavy or irregular bleeding. Other symptoms during periods include fatigue painful bowel movements, lower back pain, diarrhea or constipation and intestinal upsets. Some women may have no symptoms. The degree of a pain necessarily does not relates to size of the implants. Cause of endometriosis – There is no single theory, but believed that back flow of menstrual blood through tubes [retrograde menstruation], genetic or immune causes or transport through the blood stream may lead to endometriosis.

Diagnosis of endometriosis is usually uncertain until proven by laparoscopy. Endometriosis may be described as minimal, mild, moderate or severe depending on its extent.

Medical Treatment of endometriosis :-
Hormonal treatment offer suppression of endometriosis with few side effects. Some times these hormones are used in conjunction with laser laparoscopy. Drugs known as gonadotropin releasing hormone analogue [GnRHa] can be administered on a monthly basis to treat endometriosis. The drugs create an artificial menopause which is temporary and reversible once the patient stops taking the drug. This, “menopause” significantly decreases estrogen levels. Estrogen is known to estimate the growth of endometriosis. The results come from three to six months of treatment with these drugs.

Surgical endometriosis treatment :-
In many cases minimally invasive laparoscopy can restore the normal pelvic anatomy and alleviate pain and infertility. We recognize there can be significant suffering from endometriosis and pelvic pain and we can provide with the support you need.

Nicky- You can go to www.endocenter.org for lots of information on endometriosis from the Endometriosis Research Center. I am president of the ERC of Greater Seattle. I live with endometriosis and have had a variety of treatments. There currently is no cure and infertility is a frequent complaint. I had very severe endo that I chose to treat with excisional surgery. I manage symptoms with massage and diet.

I'm not so sure but one of my friend recovered well from endometriosis, I don't know her level but sure she has been diagnosed in early stages. Let me check her case history and will get back to you. Don't feel down, fight against this I pray you'll be the winner.
