1st IVF at 41

Post by twisterdol12 »

Just had my first IVF experience which I decided to try in the interest of saving time to get pg. Had my DD at 40 naturally.
Then got pg naturally again at 41 but miscarried at 8 weeks. My Re recommended IVF as the most aggressive way to try and get a sib for my daughter since time is running out.

Stimmed for 10 days after 1 month of bcps, 300 gonal, 150 menopur (3 days), then dropped to 150 gonal f with same menopur. My E2 was rising great but I only had 5 follicles.

On retrieval day, they got 4 eggs- all fertilized but 2 abnormally. On day 3 I had (1) 8 cell and (1) 7 cell. Decided to go to day 5 to make sure they were strong and both made it to blasts but had no inner cell structure, hence so embryo. I'm glad I waited until day 5 since I would have miscarried obviously.

My question is, should I continue with IVF to stay aggressive or just try naturally? My insurance covers nothing.

Btw, My fsh bounces around between 8-10 but my amh is very low= .43. Dh counts are all very high.

Thanks.

Re contends that IVF is still the most aggressive way we can go, but I get the feeling he doesn't feel very optimistic for me since I didn't respond that well this round with only 5 follies.

I guess I was wondering if your RE thought you might get better results by changing the protocol you used the first time. Since you are paying all the expenses out of pocket, I'm sure you want to get the best tries for your money. I was also wondering if he mentioned donor eggs to you as an option - seems like if they don't think just adjusting the protocol will work, they suggest donor eggs as an option.

It does only take one good egg to get a fighter embryo that will give your DD a sibling; there are women on this board who can attest to it.

IVF is costly and stressful; it is the most aggressive way to try and get another child...but I would find out by asking the RE directly what he thought your chance of success was...

Good luck!

Thanks. For protocol he only mentioned possibly upping my meds next time, did not mention donor eggs (which I guess is a good thing). I also know that if I asked what my % chance is, he'd probably say he couldn't answer that.

Thanks for the positive encouragement.

IVF is the most aggressive treatment. There are other protocols they can use. I used the antagonist, I hyperstim which is the opposite problem than yours but I think they use this protocol often for not producing many eggs. I had my #2 through IVF @ 38. Cost is an issue and sometimes it can take multiple cycles to see what meds and how your body reacts kinda like a very expensive science experiment on your dime unfortunately. I had 2 cancelled one failed one miscarriage and my baby boy cycle :D Which was a close call to miscarriage and had a really bad bleed during the pregnancy. If $$ is not a problem for u I would continue with IVF. It is the most aggressive naturally @ 41 the odds are probably low to get pregnant, but u never know. Good luck
