MTHFR and FET

Post by BoomerSooner »

I have done one IVF cycle, BFN and an FET cycle, BFN as well. My RE was very optimistic with both cycles. Having been diagnosed with PCOS and endo (which I had another lap for last summer, and it was not as bad as it was during my first lap in 2008), we wondered why I got another BFN on the FET which was in October of last year.

My RE wanted to do further testing after the FET and we found out I have polymorphism, which is I *think* the same as MTHFR. I also don't metabolize folate efficiently. I am instructed to take 4mg of folic acid daily and a baby aspirin. When we do another FET, I will start Herparin as well. I am not familiar with MTHFR. I'd read other womens' blogs who'd had it, but never thought I would have it too or that it would take this long to figure it out!

There are still six embryos left to be transferred. I am not getting any younger and would love to try at least once more. Do you think my RE would transfer three? It was her idea to transfer only one for our IVF, but I wanted two, but they did not stick and now we know why. I *knew* something was up during my FET. I had cramping I'd never had before and even very faint BFP tests, but I guess they could not hold on. It took af at least a week after my progesterone was done to even arrive. I bled pretty heavily. I had my blood work done a couple days after af was done and they took 12 vials (for the MTHFR and other testing). For whatever reason, I had a car wreck not five minutes after leaving the RE's office. I was in the hospital for five days. My world was turned upside down! It has given me A LOT of time to heal emotionally, mentally and spiritually, as I have been out of work since November's accident.

We've not used bcp in almost 8 years, but more actively trying for almost 6.5. While I have reached the acceptance stage, it does still hurt sometimes. Though, my good days far outnumber my bad days. That's what having a great husband and cognitive therapist can do for a girl!

I do apologize for the scatter-brained post. Apparently, my brain still has some healing to do. :)

Do any of you ladies have any advice or have you experienced anything like this; minus the wreck, of course?

Keep your hopes up.. I have seen several ladies find out the have MTHFR and go on to have successful pregnancies. As far as how many to transfer, that is up to your RE, your age and the quality of your embryo's will go into that factor. I know with PCOS patients a lot of times they produce a lot of eggs but sometimes they are not the best quality. Good Luck to you.. Join the cycle board if you want to share your experience with others going through the same crap.

Our embryo quality was quite good. All of them survived the thaw for the FET. I am just hoping this is the last thing that is wrong with me. Stinking IF!

Boomer- I have mthfr and went through my seconds ivf after finding that out. My re put me on folbic. I am currently 10 weeks pregnant and everything has gone pretty well! Although I don't have endo or pcos, I still felt that I should encourage you. Good luck I'll be praying!

Thank you, Julia! I tend to think that it has been mostly the MTHFR all along. Too bad they don't test for that when they do initial bloodwork for IF. Are you not on Herparin or Lovenox?

I have both endo and MTHFR as well as another clotting issue. I was on Lovenox throughout my pregnancy. I would still only recommend 2 ebryos be transferred. Triplets can cause a lot of complications. The goal is not only to get pregnant but have a healthy pregnancy & deliver healthy babies.
