2 day transfer success???

Post by bbdavis »

Hi everyone - any positive thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated! Here is my story ...
My husband and I have a bit of a unique situation ... he is >20 yrs post vasectomy & I am 33 with no fertility issues. We elected to undergo IVF with TESE and ICSI rather than chance a reversal not working. Time is a big factor for us, and we are hoping for success first cycle.

I had 18 follicles with 13 eggs retrieved on 9/16/13 - we were told that the eggs were all good quality. The embryologist even said that it had been a long time since they had seen eggs/sperm with the quality that we had. However, only 2 fertilized. I was then called in to do a 2 day transfer - I understand the theory behind this in that the embryos have the best chance for survival in the uterus, but still had a hard time understanding what happened. My RE was not able to give an explanation for why only 2 eggs fertilized, and going into the treatment we didn't even know a 2 day transfer was an option. On 9/18 we had 2 3-cell embryos transferred (although when they were on the screen, my RE said 3-4 cells) - but I immediately felt like the way things were going, we automatically had decreased chances. That day and the next, I was incredibly down- I just felt like we didn't have much hope.

Is there anyone out there with a similar story, or just some inspiration? :?

hi bbdavis,
We got the same background as you's..and this is our 1st time on ivf-icsi as well. Sorry I couldn't help with the 2 day transfer thing, since I'm waiting on mine. We got cancelled on the last period because I got the risk of mild ohss who everyone thought going to be more than mild since the doctor harvested too much eggs from me.
So, fingers crossed for us two, I shall see the doctor this Saturday & hoping will get to transfer next week!
baby dust to us all, darl...

It is suprising that you started with so many and only ended up with that could be transferred. BUT you honestly only need one good one!!! (The quality of the ones that did not make it does not indicate the quality of the ones that did. Those may have been abnormal in some way and the ones you transferred may be perfect. Did they give you any indication on the quality of the surviving embryos?

I have a feeling that they transferred day 2 just so they would garauntee you made it to transfer, and because they didn't need to weed any of them out. I know my clinic chooses between day 3 and day 5 and their decision is directly related to the number of embryos that you have. If you have a lot they wait til day 5 and let some of them die out. If you only have a few, then they go ahead with day 3. But that shouldn't matter, the most important it just requires one good embryo and a little luck!!! Hope you have positive results to share soon.

I have a blog with success stories if you would like to check some of them out.....
