Low fertilisation - calcium egg activation

Post by SimSim0000 »

Hi all,

I am new to this and would please need some advice from couples who are in a similar situation.

We (me 33, husband 40) just had our first round of IVF and ICSI due to our low motility (~5%). I produced 20 eggs, 18 were mature and the embryologist said that ICSI was straight forward. The next day we were told that 17 eggs did not fertilise and we were left with one grade A embryo but that one did not implant.

Now we are worried that the next cycle could also have a low fertilisation rate. Apparently this happens to less than 1% of couples so we are confused what happened. The clinic suggested to get the sperm tested in Belgium to see if they lack the ability to activate the eggs. Apparently, the activation process can be enhanced through adding calcium to the mix but given how rare this is our clinic said that there are not many cases showing big success rates. They said that only a few clinics in London have so far been able to successfully apply this process.

Does anyone have any experience with calcium egg fertilisation/ activation?
Did anyone have low fertilisation in one cycle but then had the usual 80% fertilisation in the next?
Does anyone have any idea what other reasons there are that this happened?

Any help appreciated!
