New person!

Post by Lyns »

Hi my name is Lyndsay and I have been looking on this site for the past few months and it has been a real help since my husband and I were told last year that we couldn't concieve naturally. We were told that IVF would be our best option and we went for our first meeting with the nurse at the beginning of December. We have got our first meeting with the consultant on the 9th Feb. Does anyone know whether after the first meeting with a consultant you start treatment? Also can anyone tell me how long the treatment takes on average? I'm getting quite nervous about starting now, the last few months have been the longest of my life!

:?:

Hope there's someone out there that can help!

Hi Lyndsay,
Welcome to the site and good luck with your app'y with the consultant on 9th Feb!
The start of tmt will very much depend on whether you are having NHS funded or private tmt - and the waiting lists for both!
At present there seems to be 2 ivf regimes - the long and short. The long one you take down regulation medication (either daily injection or nasal spray) for 3 weeks starting either day 1 or 21 of your cycle, folllowed by about 10 days of stimulating drugs. Once follicles on the ovaries are the right size you then have egg collection (ec) and then embryo transfer (et) 2 days after this. The short regime is started on day 1 of your cycle and ec and et done within the fortnight! The consultant decides which tmt regime is best for you.
Good luck and ask away if there's anything else you want to know - there's always someone with an answer.

Many thanks for both your replies Di and Dagny. It is really nice to know there are so many people out there in similar situations for support. We are going to have our treatment at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shropshire.

Hi Lyndsay,
Well this is all quite new to me too. I had a laparoscopy in Aug 03 and was told then that I would need ivf. We saw the consultant in Sept 03 and was told we could start the ivf treatment the following month (this was private). There was no wait if we wanted to pay privately.

We were also put on the NHS waiting list - in my area Bournemouth this is currently 2 years.
Me and my partner decided to wait until after Xmas and the New Year to start. After seeing the consultant we had to sign consent forms, have blood tests, and had to go to the clinic so my partner could do a trial run of doing a sample in more clinical surroundings (he was given a magazine!). This took a couple of weeks to get done.

My treatment Dates are: period 7th Jan; start nasal spray 27th Jan, Injections 13th Feb, Egg collection 25th Feb, Embryo transfer 27th Feb, the pregnancy test on 11th March. (these dates are if everything goes well, i.e. i have enough eggs and respond well to the drugs)

So basically 8 weeks of actual treatment.

The consultant didn't even mention that there was a short cycle, so obviously a shorter cycle is only for certain people.

Hope this helps. All the best to you, and good luck. I know what you are feeling. Its a lot to take in, so keep on checking on here.

Hi Lyns,
I too am new to this site and have lots of questions.
I saw the consultant first to go through whether I was a good candidate or not. Now I have an appointment with the nurses in March and then see the consultant again in May. I was told this was to start the treatment.

The nurses told me over the phone that I might not have to down regulate because I am on the continuous pill. I guess that means I might have a shorter treatment.

Fingers crossed that all goes well on 9th feb and you start treatment soon.

To Sophie-Jane and Shellie, both of you loads of luck for your treatments and let me know how you both get on.

I've already had about 3 different scans including a HCG, several blood tests and my hubby has also had a scan and blood test. I will just be really glad when Feb comes and I know what is going to happen and when. My doctor did initially tell me that when I go to see the consultant it would be to actually start the treatment so fingers crossed!!

Welcome Lyns
We had our 1st appointment with the conslutant last Jan I then has a lap in Feb and began treatment in June,ha put us on the nhs waiting list in March and because we live in Barnsley there is only a year waiting list which we have just had for our 3rd go so it was less then a year it all depends on where you live for the waiting lists, the hosp I go to is in Sheffield and its both a nhs and pritvate clinic so we were able to have both our pritvate and nhs treatment there which was good, the waiting list in Sheffield for ivf is 2 years so we were luckly.lets hope it work we are currently on the 2ww wait and test on sat.
If you are paying pritvate then I dont think there are any waiting lists, ther wasnt at our clinic.
Wishing you all the best in the future
Keep in touch this site has been a godsend for me
