Feeling a bit low

Post by Helen Reid »

I had an appointment with my gp today (booked it 3 weeks ago luckily). I have been having pains like af pains since saturday. Sometimes its quite painful and other times its just there. He asked how far i was 13 weeks and i told him i had not had my appointment for the 12 wk scan yet so he went and got the midwife. She came in took my details and went to phone my consultant. My gp listened to see if he could hear the heartbeat we could hear something he said that it is the baby and i could hear something but well i have been here before they said that the last time and well the baby had died two weeks before that so it could not of had been. Anyway feeling a bit better not much the midwife came back in, 'THE 2nd OF MARCH' is when i am booked in for my scan i will be 17 wks by then and boy were they not happy she is trying to get an earlier scan, they have cut back on antenatal appts can you believe it. You would of had thought that after things going wrong at my 12 wk scan in 2001 (my baby had died at 7 weeks) they would have wanted to scan me sooner. They say its because i have already had a scan, it was only one week after my 6 wk scan the baby had died. Anway i rambling my gp says if the pains don't go away by thursday or get any worse they will send me to the epu unit. I am waiting to hear back from them about my scan and should hopefully hear tomorrow.
I am just getting worried now and i have just told the rest of my family about being pg. I just feel like crying.

Helen,

No wonder you feel down. My sister had a miscarriage and then had to fight to have a scan at 12 weeks during her next pregnancy, but she did manage to persuade the hospital in the end (and everything was fine).

If you get no joy, can you get to the EPU yourself? I got really wound up at 16 weeks during my pregancy and DH took me down to the hospital and insisted that they scanned me. You've been through enough and don't need any more stress so they really should give you a scan to reassure you.

Take care.

Helen, this must be so worrying particularly as you've been thru a very painful experience before. i hate saying "if i were you", but you've been thru so much that i think you should go to an epu anyway to put your mind at rest. i know the nhs are under resourced but saving on 12wk scans!! you could go back to your gp or you can source the local epu thru nhs direct.

i do know that you'll probably have pains in your cervix, which is normal, so it could be this. it's not easy to get to where we have so make sure you get as much attention as you need.

best wishes

poor you - I agree with the others - get yourself in to the EPU - they will totally understand and put your mind at rest.#
I lost Oliver at 20 weeks and currently in a flap - nearly 13 weeks now but had my scan at 11.3 and now convinced that I am shrinking - probably the bump has moved up or something but still flap due to last time so I know how you feel and I had a scan 10 days ago

helen, the worry u must be gong thru must be unbelievabe,
like the other girls have said u need to get to an epu for
peace of mind, i would phone your doc again today, even if the
pain is not as bad, tell him a white lie tell him its got worse over night
an u need to get to an epu soonest. It makes me so angry, surely
they must know how u are feeling, and stress is the last thing
u need. Make that phone call, so u can put your mind at rest.

Hell Helen

That is rediculous!!!! I can't belive they are making you wait all that time and knowing your past history too. That is just cruel.

Like the others have said, get yourself down to the EPU and demand a scan. Make up some white lies - who cares as long as you get to see the baby. You must be going out of your mind.

Thinking of you and good luck.

When i had my bleeding scare a few weeks ago i went straight to the private clinic where we had treatment that morning for a scan. It was the best 5 minutes and £90 ever spent to put our minds at rest.
Don't wait else you will get yourself in a right state.

good luck,helen :D

Hi all

Thankyou for all your replies and thoughts. I am still having pains but my midwife phoned this morning and they have got me a scan appt on Friday at 9.45am at the local maternity unit but if i am still in pain to phone them and they will send me there to the epu. I have not had any discaharge and she says that is a good sign. I got my letter from the consultant with the date in march i wanted to rip it up and fling it in the bin. There was all the leaflets about my care in with it i just thought you pigs you don't care and i quote you 'the purpose of the early scan (usually before 14 weeks)' yeh right and it went on. Anyway i am relaxing on the couch with my baby book. I was suppose to go into town today with my mum and sis to buy maternity bras but i will leave it to friday.
If my pains are still here tomorrow i am going to phone my gp.

Thankyou for listening

Oh Helen,
I cannot imagine many things more torturous than your waiting. When I had my bleeding last time (m/c between 6 and 7 weeks) my consultant called me for a scan immediately even though they were clearly packed. I do hope you can manage till Friday and then just will keep my fingers crossed for you and will be sending positive vibes and hoping with all my heart that it's just a scare of the kind that we all have especially when you've been there before (and I lost the baby earlier, I imagined it must get harder with every next day of hope).
love and a big hug XXX

Poor you - this is totally outrageous that different hospitals provide such drastically different ante-natal care. Bloody government!!!!!

I wanted to try and reassure you about the pains (not sure it will help, but worth a try!) when I was 8-9 weeks I had horrendous af type pains and was bent double in pain - dh was all for taking me to A&E, although I managed to calm him down telling him they wouldn't be able to do anything.

I rang my fertility nurse and also my midwife and they both said the same thing that this pain is usually felt by mothers of singletons at 12-14 weeks but because I'm carrying twins it happened sooner. The pain was the pelvis flicking outwards (this is not the technical description they used!) and changing shape in order for the babies to grow. Also I'd been sick an awful lot and they thought I may have torn a few ligaments from wretching (sorry to be so graphic!). Maybe this could be linked to your pains.

I was told to check for discharge of bleeding, but I had neither and the pains eventually went away.

Please try not to worry. You will feel much better after your scan on Friday and hopefully it will reveal the baby is fine and that your pains are similar to those I experienced.

Let us know how you get on.

love nikola.xx

ps in the meantime try to rest - I know its not easy because the pains are so damned uncomfortable!!

Hi Helen,
I agree with the rest, it is shocking that you are having to wait so long. If you are really stressing, just go the the EPU - that's what they are there for and the last thing you need is to be stressing if you don't need to be.
I'm sure things are fine - lots of people get pains (including me), remember, your body is doing a lot of changing, even now. I know it's off no consolation, but we are all thinking about you.
Rest up and take care,

Hi all

Thankyou all again for the support the pains have not eased much, but i have decided to wait until tomorrow. I find walking about a bit has helped a bit. I am trying not to think about it but its hard i was going to phone my gp this morning as it was rather sore but it calmed down after a few minutes. I do feel better mentally today trying to stay +ve and i suppose i will find out tomorrow if all this worrying has been for nothing which i am sure it is.
