Mum's big day...at last Mar 20 2004

By Justine Hollins

Mother's Day is special for any mum but Michelle Warke will cherish it even more because it's been such a long time coming.

After three years trying for a baby without success with husband Lee, the 29-year-old almost gave up hope of ever becoming a mum.

But six weeks ago that day finally came when Michelle gave birth to her “little miracle” son Alex, who she describes as a “bundle of joy”.

And she’s not the only Midland mum who will have an extra special reason to smile tomorrow.

Michelle and 29-year-old Lee, a milkman in Lichfield, are just one of 137 couples who have given birth since last Mother’s Day with help from experts at Aldridge-based Midland Fertility Centre.

“We wanted a baby so much. Every month I found out I wasn’t pregnant was terrible. We got to a point where we said ‘It’s never going to happen to us is it?’” said Michelle, a help-desk agent at GO Post in Smethwick.

“Every Mother’s Day that went by I would go and buy my mum a card and wonder if I would ever get the chance to put up my own Mother’s Day card.”

It took just one IVF ICSI treatment for Michelle, of Reedswood, Walsall, to make the breakthrough.

She suffers with endometriosis which makes it very difficult to get pregnant, but doctors told her after the first treatment: “You’re going to be a mum!”

Michelle, a former pupil at Manor High School in Wednesbury, added: “It was like a rollercoaster ride. But when I found out I was pregnant I was in shock and just kept crying.

“I remember looking at Lee and saying ‘Oh my god, we’re going to be parents’. We were over the moon. It took a while to sink in.

“When Alex was born I kept looking over thinking how beautiful he was and how he was mine. He’s our little miracle, and now we can’t imagine our lives without him.

“Sunday’s going to be very emotional. I’m finally going to get my first Mother’s Day card - so there will probably be more tears.”

Hi Shell,
I only now saw this and I think it is wonderful to share your story with people and be able to give others hope, the same as with this message board. I did not realise you had endometriosis. I did too and had two big cysts removed a few years ago before starting with IVF. It makes being pregnant even more of a miracle!

Thanks Shell

That's very sweet of you to say. We are really hoping that we can move on one day and also face Mothers Day in the next few years with more than a tear.

I hope Alex has done a nice poo for you  eventually.

:D Dear Shell,

Lovely article!!! Did you have your photo in the paper as well?

Mother's Day was special for me this year as well. I got a lovely bunch of flowers, a box of chocolates and a card from baby Daniel (with a little help from his dad)! Best of all though was the smile that I got from Daniel in the morning when he'd just woken up.

Alison xx

P.S. Hope the pooing has got better!

Hi Alison,

Lovely to hear from you, how is Daniel doing? how much does he weigh now? well Alex still ain't done a poo yet but I am going to phone the health visitor tomorrow and see what she says because he can't carry on like this because he just doesn't want his full feeds.

Yeah I did have my photo's in the paper, there was a photo of the 3 of us on the front page and then me & Alex was inside it was lovely.

Love
Shell.

8) Hi Shell,

Daniel is fine thanks. He was weighed 2 weeks ago (when he was 6 weeks old) and he was 12lbs 2 oz. I'm going to get him weighed tomorrow, so we'll see then, but he's certainly not wasting away!! He had his first set of jabs on Monday and he's been very sleepy since. Thankfully he didn't have a fever, but then I did give him some Calpol just in case.

Hope Alex is okay. Have you tried giving him some cooled boiled water instead of milk?

I saw Adey this week at baby massage. Her and Niamh are very well.

Alison xx

PS I tried your email address but the message bounced back. Can you send me it again?

Hi Alison,

I am glad all went ok with the jabs its such a worry because you just don't know how they are going to respond do you. Bless him for sleeping though, is this normal? I have tried the water but it doesn't help really. He has had a poo today but its day 4 and my was it hard (Sorry) I did leave a message for the health visitor to call me but she asn't but I will leave another message tomorrow because I would of thought he should be going more then what he is. Please let me know how Daniel gets on at weigh in. How was Adey and little one? never see her on the boards anymore!!
My Addy is warkie@hotmail.com
