Ovarian overstimulation & hypothyroid

Post by ydgg »

Dagney,

You mention you had OHSS a while back. I've been given a mild/moderate OHSS dx as of yesterday after my bloating turned extreme (with some fluid in the torso). I feel like I'm already 4 months pg (only 4 weeks), with difficulty breathing, eating and now sleeping.

Is it true it could take up to 10 weeks to resolve itself? Its so uncomfortable!

Also, does anyone know if continuing with synthyroid is recommended for hypothyroidism during pg?

Thanks in advance,

Yvonne

Hi Yvonne

Yes, I did have a severe case of OHSS in my 1st IVF cycle. I hyperstimulated big time and the embryologist had to decide whether to but the emryo's back in - which he did and in hind sight was the worst thing to do. I collapsed within 5 minutes and was rushed into hospital with a stomach ready to POP  I have never known pain like it!!!

I was put on oxygen a morphine pump (5 minute intervals), catheterised and had a stomach drain. The first week I was unaware of what was going on, didn't eat or drink and was sick constantly. By the second week I could sit up but my ovaries we like melons and walking was not an option. My consultant was so worried he even came up to the ward a few times which the nurses later told me he NEVER does. Normally he sends his little workers.

I didn't really read about OHSS before my treatment thinking it wouldn't happen to me - WRONG!!!!!!! I didn't drink enough water or milk and that's the worst thing especially in the summer when it's hot anyway.

Yvonne, you must try to drink as much as you possibly can and rest loads too. Take pain killers, paracetamol is safe if you are PG. I am sorry you have got this and you have my sympathy. It is horried  It can take time for it to settle down. Mine took weeks and my ovaries were huge for even longer.

I am afraid I don't know the answer to your other questions.

Look after yourself. I wasn't trying to scare you with a horror story but unless someone tells you how bad it can get you just assume it's nothing to worry about. I wish someone had told me before. Good luck.

Love Dagny xkx

Thanks, Dagney for the info. I had a delayed reaction (2 weeks after the hcg shot). My doctor says its moderate, not requiring hospitalization, although the thought of morphine is tempting to put me out of my misery.

I can't believe how big my girth can be - I look 5 months pg already!

Oh well, I guess it just needs lots of rest and fluids and patience.

Thanks again and take care,

yvonne
