Question for new mums...

how do you keep the nursery cool? I've been looking at my (several) temperature gauges in my nursery and in this muggy weather it has been around 23-24. I know it should be nearer 18-20. Do you use a fan (noisy?) an air conditioner or just open a window?

Hi Helen Louise, we're not famous for our warm weather but when it's too warm here we open the window (daytimes only) - we've the restricted opening ones that open at the top. We're on the 4th floor so v. important!

I should say we also use a grobag/sleeping bag all year round, for all her naps, it's a sleep association I encouraged.

HELLO WELL JACK WAS BORN LAST JULY AND IT WAS SOOOOOOOO HOT..I KEPT HES CLOTHING LIGHT AND HAD THE WINDOW OPEN...I SWEAR BY THE GROW BAGS HE WAS IN THEM BY 8WKS...NOW AS ITS WARMER I KEEP A FAN GOING AT NIGHT..
BUT WITH BABIES I THINK YOU SHOUL AVOID A DRAFT SO I'D SAY LESS BLANKETS.............JACKS ROOM SOMETIMES GOES OFF THE TEMP GAGE .

Hi there,

Have to say that we keep the window open as Sam's nowhere near it, but we've also had to use a fan on occasion (yes, even in Scotland!)

He tends to kick his blanket off anyway... Do these sleeping bag things not keep them hot? Does 2.5 tog = one blanket?

grow bags are brill if your bubba is a monkey like mine who kicks the blankets/sheets off then crys in the night cos they are cold.

2.5tog is for winter but they do a 1tog which is like a thin blanket..which is ideal for summer nights.

i got mine from mothercare..but this site does all different styles and ages.

Megan's room was also really warm last night, so I too leave a window open, and she is also in a gro-bag, which I agree are fantastic.

She's in a lightweight one at the moment, and I didn't put a vest under her sleepsuit last night either, to ensure she doesn't overheat. I get really paranoid about her getting hot and much prefer if she is cooler, as that causes no harm.

Off out to walk around in the sunshine soon, my tan is comnig on a treat, who needs the Carribean?!

Zoe, Maya is a warm baby but doesn't overheat in her gro-bag. She doesn't wear a body under her pjs from spring+. Maybe because their arms are free, they self-regulate? I agree with Beck that they are invaluable for helping get them through the night. We don't use a duvet or blankets at all (the sleeping bag manufacturers expressly advise against using a duvet as well).

Maya is 14m so very active and twists onto her tummy and sits up in bed now. The bag doesn't stop her from doing this although it's yet to be tested when she works out how to stand. It should stop her from trying to climb out though.

If you want to see lots of different brands at the same time, have a look at 'baby sleeping bags' on ebay.co.uk always lots of and lots on there.

We live in a relatively new house and it' a nightmare trying to keep it cool. Did buy a sleeping bag, but it's 2.5 tog and I've never used it, so I took it back today. Will try and get another lower tog one I think. The only thing is, he's 24 weeks, but I suppose really only 17 development wise as he was so early so I may leave it until he fits 6-12 months..Sam is a nightmare as he kicks everything off and tends to just sleep in his jammies. Mind you, he's still in his moses basket, but that's my fault. He really needs to be in his cot and could have been a while ago, but I'll miss him when he goes in the next room

Hi

I have the same worry i seem to spend alot of time looking at the temperature. I could be cold and the therometer says it 23 degrees, it nevers seems to go below 20 degrees. i open and close windows all day. I am using less blankets now as i am so scared about overheating. I did think about the gro bags but was not sure about them i thought they might be to restricting as Duncan likes to kick his covers off and have his legs in the air or like a frog (scrunched up at the bottom of the pram).

hi helen,
jack is 13mths old and the grow bag never stops him from doing anything he still walks about in hes cot, and can play with it not causing him frustration.

im not one for these thermometer things as jacks room is always 27 even in the winter. i just go with what i feel like if im cold then he must be to and vice versa.

im now looking to getting jack a new 18-36 mth grow bag as mines getting small now. i used a blanket the other night cos it was in the wash and what happened jack woke me up 3 times in the night because he kicked hes covers off and got cold.

i saw that some of you were worried because the grow bags are to big...i used mine about 8wks old. i just tucked the end of the grow bag under the matress so jack couldnt move it.
