Tubal Treatment..

Post by Kel »

Hi Girls,

Just wondered if anyone else with tubal damage has looked into the clinic link on this website regarding Fallopian Tube Treatment? It doesn't seem to be tubal surgery, but there is not much info on the clinics website (The Regency Clinic), but it says that after this treatment there is a 80-90% success rate. I've just emailed them to try and find out more information, but just wondered if anyone else had read about this?? I did lots of research on tubal surgery recently and what I could find on the net didn't read very positive really, so not getting my hopes up too much but was glad to see another approach! Thought it may be worth looking into?

Thanks,

Yes have read it out of interest as i am a buggered tube bod myself
Depends on what is wrong with your tubes. Mine are knackered - they said no way - they are very scarred and completely blocked and one is stuck to the bowel. Then after first ivf and ectopic they removed one completely and could not get the other as stuck to the bowel so clipped it.

Tubal surgery has improved immensely as I am sure you know but it is risky as they can block again and they are such piddly things that your chances of ectopic increase - personally depending on what you have wrong with them I would stick with IVF in serious tubal problems as the chance of being successful with ivf outweighs the chances of successful tubal!

Hi Beck and Tracey,

Thanks for your replies.. Beck - congrats to you with your little boy!
Tracey - That is the thing, I don't know exactly how bad my 1 tube remaining is, although I know there are adhesions. After my ectopic the consultant offered me the lap and dye to see further extent, but I was so terrified after that, we went straight to IVF as I didn't want to risk trying again. So I turned it down as the thought of ever trying naturally frightened me then. But, now I am trying to be more open about trying again naturally or surgey before my 2nd go with IVF. I think the main reason is, if the possibilty of the remaining tube causing another ectopic through IVF I feel I should find out through every other way if possible. Sorry for the ramble, hope that makes sense? Maybe I should have the lap+dye first to know more. If you don't mind me asking, did you ever have one? Thanks so much for your help and advice, we're all going to be lost soon!!!!!  Hope you are ok - nearly there!!

HSG dye test

Post by sue e »

Hi Kel,

Hope you dont mind me butting in but you mentioned the lap and dye test. I had a HSG test where they inserted a small tube and the radiologist injected small amounts of dye at a time, if tube is not blocked it flows straight through the tubes so you get results there and then. Unfortunately for me my remaining tube was blocked so i had quite a bit of discomfort because of the build up of fluid. I dont know if this helps at all or even if its the one your thinking of, but overall it wernt too bad.

Yes I had a lap and dye - was referred to a specialist who put me on clomid for 3 months - I had a feeling my problem was always going to be blocked tubes but he laughed and said I was thinking the worst - who got the last laugh then or cry should I say :(
They shot dye through but absolutley none would come out the other end -she said there was a mass of adhesions - between the lines I think it read like an accident report.

They can sort out adhesions but best to know first how bad they are - I would go for a lap and dye - really out very quickly and a bit sore after but nothing much to worry about. At least you will know.

Good luck in whatever you decide - will watch with interest if I have time!

Blimey I have been asking exactly the same questions as this recently. I have knackered tubes. I had a lap and dye last year. They managed to unblock one (but it was still scared and had some adhesions) and one was completely blocked. When I saw the consultant after this he said I could have furtehr surgery, but that it is 80% successful in some cases and he thought I would be in the 20% unsuccessful group, so I went straight for ivf. However after having two unsuccessful ivf attempts I have started looking into tubal surgery a bit more. I sent off to the Regency clinic for info on their tubal surgery. There are two different types, and I am not sure at what end my tubes are blocked therefore need to go back to my consultant and get furtehr info about what the lap and dye showed. There is "Fallopian tube catherisation - TCTC" (the Regency is the only place that does this I think) and then tubal surgery. TCTC is not suitable for fallopian tubes that are blocked at the distal end (away from the womb).

I really want to go for tubal surgery now ... just to give it a go.
What put me off however is that the lap and dye was really painful. I was off work for 2 weeks. Howeevr I have known someone else to have a lap and dye and they were back to work in 3 days.
I have an appointment with my consultant on 8th September to discuss it a bit more. I know the TCTC at the Regency is £2000.00 so I first want to check it out with my consultant down here to see what he thinks.
I've rambled a bit sorry, not sure whether I have helped anyone.
Good luck Kel, let me know what you find out and I will do the same. I would certainly recommend the lap and dye as at least you find out a bit more about whats wrong.

Hi Girls - Thanks so much for all the info!
I will phone this week and now arrange for the lap + dye, you are right at least I will know for sure how bad the adhesions are. I think I just didn't want to know before but I really want to go through all my options now.
Sophie-Jane, thanks for the info regarding the Regency Clinic as I still have not heard back from them. That's a big help. so, I am just wondering, does that mean they will accept the results of a lap+dye from the hospital, they don't need to do any tests at their clinic? Sorry if that seems like a silly question! I am really with you on giving this a go if it's possible. I have great faith of course in IVF, but while I'm waiting to cycle again, I just want to make sure I've done everything possible to satisfy my own sanity!! Definately keep in touch and let me know how you get on. Good luck for your appointment on the 8th, hope it all goes well..
Thanks Again!

Dr. Adamson at my clinic has been doing infertility treatments for over 20 years. I asked him about tubal surgery, since I also had blocked tubes. Here is what he said:

Surgery used to be the only option for scarred/blocked tubes, before there was IVF. The pregnancy rates were pretty low, however. One problem was that there are little hairs inside the tubes that move the egg along from the ovary into the uterus. The hairs are very delicate, so usually they are damaged before scarring even shows up. The hairs cannont be replaced. This is one reason there are so many ectopic pregnancies in women with scarred tubes.

Also, in my case, my blocked tubes were filled with fluid. If that fluid leaked into the uterus, it could terminate a pregnancy. So my clinic highly recommended to me to have both tubes removed before starting IVF, which I did in January. It is an outpatient surgery, but fairly involved (i.e. restricted diet, no food the day before, general anesthesia, pain killers, bed rest, $27,000 US !!!!!!!!!). It was surpisingly not painful and the recovery was very fast.

So now, without tubes, I can only get pregnant through IVF, which I actually rather like. So when all those well meaning people tell me about their friends who tried IVF 18 times and then decided to adopt and then got PG naturally, I can say "nice for them, but that won't happen to me". Also after TTC for years, I am relieved that if we stop IVF tmt, that's it. We know for sure we won't be having children and can plan accordingly.

Sorry for the long post. Hope it helps.

Oh, one more very important thing. I have a friend who did have tubal surgery to remove a blockage. She had two children naturally after that. So it definately does work in some cases.
