Just wondered if anyone had done or had views on pre-genetic screening. My clinic (ARGC in London) is one of only a few, I think, in the Uk who offer this. They take a cell out of each embie, send it the States and they check for some of the most common problems which would make the embryo non-viable and lead to either a negative or a later miscarriage. They can also check for Downs. Because I'm 42 I'm likely to have more dodgy eggs so it sounds like a really good idea. But it's £2250, plus they prefer you to have ICSI which adds another £900 and it's already costing a fortune.
The clinic are recommending it, but also say see how many embies you've got. If you've only got 3 put them all back and hope for the best. I'm coming close to EC (on day 10 of stims) and the last scan I had they said the follicles were growing well and numbers shouldn't be a problem, so I could have more than 3 embies. I don't want to be deciding something so important under pressure, so feel like I need to think about it now.
Any thoughts? Is it worth it? Should I go beg from my Mum? Or just risk it?
well my clinic dont offer this if they did i know i would say no i dont want my embis tested but thats me.
All i can say to you is what if the tests showed something up on all your embies would you decide not to use them ?
or would you still want to try with them and give them a chance. Are the tests 100% ?
its seems a lot of money to me but then all these things cost loads i cant tell you what to do you need to decide that for yourself
good luck in what you do decide to do let me kno also when you decide
Our dream came true after 5 yrs ttc we know have 8month old twin boys Adam and Kieran and our gorgeous 9 yr old daughter.
Hang in there miracles really do happen
Hi Caroline. Tough call but if it were me (and genetic testing isn't allowed by law here so this answer is purely hypothetical) I'd go for it. I'm 40 and have 2 nephews with a genetic disorder so the potential is definitely there for us.
I had an amnio first time round and the stress I felt waiting for the results was easily the worst I've ever had. Yes, it was my decision to have the amnio but if there was a way of being sure before the pg began, personally, I'd want to know.
Good luck,
Debra.

Hi Caroline
You don't say whether there is any reason for the clinic recommending this test other than your age. I think I probably wouldn't go for it but then I dont get many embies. However I have a general rule that if MrT advises it I usually go for it!! So not much help there. If you are not sure why dont you try to have a chat with them, let them know how you feel.
Good luck for this weekend I hope ec is soon for you.
thanks for your replies. I'm still fretting about it but I think it will come down to money. There's no reason other than age that they're suggesting it and Ellie, like you I follow what Mr T says to the letter, but he's doesn't say we have to have it. In fact, he's said wait til we see the quality of your eggs but the nurse said that's really unhelpful as they need to know on the day of EC whether we're doing it and they won't know the quality til the next day. To be honest Angela, if they said all our embryos were defective I wouldn't put any back (I don't think they'd let us, actually) because I'd rather be disappointed now than get my hopes up and then have a miscarriage.
I think we've concluded that we'd like to do it but I don't think we can afford it and my Mum's already giving us most of the money and I don't think she'll stretch any further as it's cost more than we anticipated. So I guess the decision is a bit out of our hands really.
