I'm hoping to start my first IVF with ICSI in September, once my husband has had surgical sperm retrieval (had vasectomy 8 yrs ago).
I've had loads of general anaesthetics this year for problems with my eyes and am wondering what kind of anaesthetic they give you for egg collection as i don't want any more generals. If it's local/twilight can your husband stay with you?
Also, how can i expect to feel afterwards?
thanks
9 failed attempts using thawed, surgically retrieved sperm.
2 year break and vasectomy reversal for dh.
Consultation for 10th attempt using fresh sperm - Nov 09.
I think it depends on the cycle, but I know you can have EC by sedation rather than a general and I think I with sedation your DH can come in. I opted for general and my DH didn't want to come in ... there were just some parts of my body he didn't want to see!
How you feel afterwards depends really on you and your body. Generally you feel sore, groggy and a bit bloated and there is a little bit of light bleeding.
From my experience, 1st time I was ok within 24hrs, but they only collected 7 eggs, so I wasn't under for so long. 2nd time I had mild ohss and it took 2-3 days but they collected 20 eggs!
hi natalie, it all depends where u are having treatment, for my first
three goes at icsi i was at the london womens clinic and they give
u an injection that makes u feel drowsey and are not realy aware
of what is going on around u but my dp was next to me through out,
then my last treatment was at the lister where they give u a general
so was completely out and dp waited in the room for my return,
you should check with your clinic to see what they do.
As for how u feel afterwards, well u must remember we are all
different and our bodies react differently, some girls feel fine
other girls get very bloated and very uncomfortable, i think the
best thing is to be open minded about it, and try not to worry too
much.
good luck alisonn
I think it depends where you go as different clinics/hospitals seem to have different ways of doing things. I'm at Guys in London and they do it by sedation. They gave me an injection and the next thing I remember I was back in the recovery room (but apparently I was jabbering away throughout the whole procedure!). My DH comes in with me which I'm glad off as I like him there to hold my hand.
I felt a little bit tired and tender afterwards - but nothing too bad.
I know I was petrified before my first EC and didn't sleep a wink the night before - but I've had 2 now (and just doing my 3rd cycle) and it really isn't anything to worry about at all.
Take care and please try not to worry about it.

i am currently going thro mu first icsi cycle and am petrified of EC i am at kings college and they do it under sedation but they are also running trials where they do it by local aneasthetic i want local i want to be awake and totally with it i have never had general so think this is why i fear it all so much being out of it that is im hoping i get local the doc said right at the beginning that i could have it done under local ithout going into the trial so im hoping this is what i get as for how you fell after i cant answer this as im not at the ec stage yet think i have about 10 days to go im stimming at the moment but everyone is different as some of the girls have said one thing to remember tho is drink as much water as you possible can thro out your icsi cycle think im drinking around 5 litres a day now mostly water but also milk

Our dream came true after 5 yrs ttc we know have 8month old twin boys Adam and Kieran and our gorgeous 9 yr old daughter.
Hang in there miracles really do happen
Natalie,
I had my retrieval under sedation, they put it in an iv. Plus they gave me something to relax before going under. I've never heard of a retrieval under general, they would need to intubate you for that and be in a hospital. I had bad reactions with general and this was totally different. I had no effects from the drugs, it wears off really quickly. DH was not allowed in he was in a room right outside.
I was really scared of the retrieval too, in fact delayed going into IVF because I was so scared but it's really not that bad, my insides didn't feel so great afterwards, but it only lasted a day or so. I think a lot of the fear for me was the unknown.
