has anyone heard of this..?

Post by kju »

hello everyone

we are currently having our first icsi cycle, I have been stimming for a week now and went for scan today to see how many follies there are (i knew there must be some as I am so bloated I already look like I'm pg  )

the left ovary is fine with about 5 or more 10-15mm follicles, but there is a problem with the right ovary, the nurse said it had moved to the wrong side of the uterus and this may mean that the follies on there cannot be reached during EC

she couldn't get a good picture on the ultrasound as the uterus was in the way, I was quite shocked and a bit upset, as I have never heard of this before

I have another scan on friday, the nurse said if the follies grow the weight of them may pull the ovary back to normal position but I am quite worried that we may not have many good eggs if we only have the 5 follies as I have read that not every follicle will contain an egg

I just hope it moves back to the right place for EC and we will be able to reach the follies and not let them go to waste

this is our first treatment and I seem to be worrying at the slightest thing that goes wrong, I suppose this is normal?

if any of you have experienced this or have heard of it please let me know,

thanks for your help

good luck to everyone (wherever you are in your treatment :D )

Kirsten,
I am not sure if my expereince is exactly like your, but here is what happened with my "hard to see ovary".
When my follicles were still about 7-8mm I had to endure a very long and uncomfortable scan. The RE was moving the wand around inside me and pressing on my stomach. He even had me to keep changing my postion. All of this was in an attempt to get a good view of my right ovary which he said was "high"and "hard to see". The scan was almost 45min long, and he poked and prodded the entire time. He finally gave up and did not count the follicles on that ovary for that visit. I of course was worried that we would not be able collect from my right ovary.

The scan was so uncomfortable I was actually dreading my next scan, but the next scan was a breeze. The RE barely had the wand inside me before we could see my right ovary just as clear as can be. The RE asked me what I had done to jiggle the ovary back down in viewing range but I had no idea.
We ended up having over 30 follicles divided evenly between both ovaries.

Hi Kirsten, my left ovary is behind my uterus and over towards the right side and is difficult to see in scans which can be a little uncomfortable.

When I have EC the left side always causes them problems - BUT they have managed to get the eggs but they have to do it differently from the other side - again it is a bit uncomfortable.

The weight of the follies can make the ovaries move around -so hopefully when you go back in for your next scan it will be easier to see.

Good luck - let us know how you get on.

Hi Mia & Dolly

thanks so much for your replies, they are very reassuring

for my first scan the right ovary was visible so it must be the follies that have moved it around so maybe they can be moved again for EC

i think i just freaked out a bit yesterday as this is our first tmt

i have another scan tomorrow so hopefully things may have moved again

thanks again for your replies

Hi,
I have a problem with my right ovary which is higher than my left and in an unusual place. When i have scans done i have to have an internal scan and then i have a scan done on top of my tummy and they have always managed to get a good look at it and see what is happening. When the follicles have grown it must move my ovary as the nurse is then able to scan both ovarys internally without any problems. Also i have always produced at least 16 eggs so it hasn't affected my treatment in any way and the doctors are not at all concerned that it is slighty higher than usual.Infact i have always had more follicles and eggs than we thought as some haven't shown up clearly on my right ovary. So please don't worry i'm sure it won't affect your treatment at all and hopefully you will have more follicles and eggs than you think.Good luck with your treatment and take care and try not to worry. If they still have problems at your next scan ask them if they can try and scan you externally too.
Love,
Nicky

Hi

I had my final scan today and the right ovary is still above the uterus but we could see it a bit better and it looks like it has plenty of good size follies from 10-20mm! the left one also has lots of good size ones.

the nurse said that they would put me out for the EC (not just sedation) and may be able to manipulate the ovary to get to the follies but she said not to worry as there were plenty on the left if they can't reach the right one

i feel much better now and am not so worried as we should still have plenty on the left ovary for EC, also my lining was nice and thick ready for our embies next week :D

they have moved the EC back an extra day to tuesday to give a couple of smaller follies on the left time to grow a bit more so we will have as many as possible

looks like i will be testing about 7th october

i am really excited now and also nervous as I suppose everyone is for their first time

i would just like to thank everyone here for sharing their experiences and feelings as i have learned so much about the treatment and everything surrounding it from you all

thanks again
