very new to all this! am scared!

Post by Saskia »

Hi everyone!

Just found this week that hubby has no sperm at all and are now searching for list of clinics in London / Essex / Herts area - any information?

My GP is very confident that DIUI will work but reading how many goes some couples have gone through i now feel very apprehensive.
We are quite lucky as cost is not a problem and have really supportive family on both sides
This is another world what we are about to enter into - any words of advice / warning / friendly chat would be v.v.welcome.

Hi Saskia, welcome to the boards - I think you'll find it a great support - I know I do.

If you are after a list of clinics the best place to go is the HFEA website (www.hfea.gov.uk). It is a great source of information - you can link into the different clinics website which will give you an idea of what they offer and costs etc as every clinic is different.

Don't be apprehensive about it all - just because other people have been through a few cycles doesn't mean you will have to - there are lots of people who are lucky and get a +ve first time. The clinic you choose will be able to advise as to what they think is the best treatment for you.

I have had IUI and IVF - so if you have any questions - fire away.

Good luck

Hiya Saskia,

Welcome to the board. The girls here are very friendly, informative and helpful, as you have already discovered.

I am in a similar situation as it will be my first time with IVF, when we can actually go for it. My husband has got extremely low motility, and even the ones that are swimming are not swimming fast enough, as well as a slightly high deformity. We were very shocked when we were told as we figured it was me with the problem, as my periods are so infrequent (at this moment I have gone 15 1/2 weeks since my last one).

So until I have my next one, they can't finish the blood tests.

Im very scared as to what the future holds, and also apprehensive like yourself, but as Dolly said, there are success stories too.

I hope you find yourself a decent clinic. If you fancy a chat, or have any questions feel free to email me. Unfortunately as I have not been through it myself yet I dont know as much as the other girls, but I am here as a friend if you need me. :)

Take care

Thanks everyone!

Your replies have made me realise I'm not alone in this, we have narrowed clinics down to two (are we allowed to name them on here??) for treatment, just waiting for first appointment.

I will def keep posting - just to keep in touch with my new friends!

I wish US all luck xxx

Relived I found the site just before im due to start my first cycle of icsi - feel much calmer knowing theres people to talk to who Really understand. If any body has tips on how to stay stress free they would be much appreciated.
also in a dilema who to confide in. is it best to tell as few people as possible or share it with more people, so as to explain my mood swings & lack of alchol intake.

Hi Joe,
I am getting near ET on my first Egg Donor IVF Cycle. I have been TTC for nearly 6 years now and I would say less than 15 people in total know about my fertility problems and that I am having treatment. Ordinarily my heart is on my sleeve but have found things much easier to contain this to close family and friends. It's an individual thing of course just do what feels right for you and good luck Jill x

HI saskia - just read your post. Just to say - that you really really aren't alone. Remember half of ALL infertility cases are because of low or no sperm count, so it aint just down to us girls!

My DH had NO sperm in ejaculate (mumps at 16) and they eventually got a few (as in 8 I think!) from a frozen biopsy they did a year or so ago (with TESE - do you know about this procedure ??)

After 2 goes of ICSI (1st unsuccesful) -I am now AMAZINGLY pregant. So the strangest things DO happen!

We were very strongly considering Donor -and would have gone ahead with it if our ICSI treatment hadn't worked. My DH just felt that he could accept using a donor easier if we had exhausted all other avenues.
I still think about it alot - because you never know we might have to consider it again in the future - I can't believe that everything will be okay with this pregnancy (am ultra pessimist!!) and if we ever wanted another child I don't know how easy it would be.

ANYWAY - defo check the HFEA website for clinics. Also I recommend that you chat to the Donor conception network - they are very pro "openness" which I found a bit hard as I don't know if I would be that open - I kind of feel like its noones busines how your child is conceived and I'm not sure what good it does your child either, really?
You should probably make sure you have had a good chat with your DH about these things - just so you can set a few ground rules?? Although once your pregnant I doubt you'll spend much time thinking about HOW you got pregnant. I dont, really.

I guess you are aware that the law changes next year - so that the child can find the donor once they are 18 - ie, all donors will have to give identfing information when they donate. I think thats right??
If you really DON'T want your child to be able to find the donor (to be honest I don't think we would have) - you can import from the USA - its a bit of a hassle but doable- just make sure your clinic is set up to do it. Am sure more and more are nowadays

Anyway - good luck -don't be scared - be excited - miracles happen!!
Sorry for rambling!

Hi Caz!!

Hows are you feeling!!??

I am soooo crapping myself.........can't believe I am still doing this. Feels like everyone I have ever cycled with has moved over to the other side and I am still the only one cycling!!

Anyway day 3 of stimms today and feel like dirt...soooo tired, and i have to go to my clinic every day for bloods!!! Anyway I am so scared this time of even believing that I may have a chance of getting pregnant because I just don't know how I could cope for the 6th time if it failed........and the large part of me not longer can find any positivity in me..........I ran out of that after the third try!

Apart from that I spend my life avoiding friends who know I am the worlds biggest drinker as I don't want anyone knowing about treatment and they will know something is up and i am on water!!!!!

Love and hugs

Hi Joe,
Just another thought on keeping calm. My hospital offers hypnotherapy along with councelling. I have found it very relaxing and you are sent away with a tape which you can use as often as you like. love Jill x
