Cot antics

Help! Every night Jay wakes up, having got himself into one of several impossible positions in the cot. He has a grobag (just as well otherwise he'd be permanently frozen like a little prawn), but I was wondering if this is normal to move around so much??

I had made a bit of a rod for my own back by allowing him to go to sleep with a dummy, so if he gets somewhere he can find it he puts it back in, but if he can't find it or if he gets stuck he wakes up.

I thought that the early days of swaddling would continue - you know - lay baby down, return to find baby in the same position, not put baby down in grobag then return to find baby at the top of the cot on his front with his head stuck against the bars!

Is it the same for all babies??

Sally, we have the same issue although it's got better over time. Maya also wears a sleeping bag and although she usually sleeps facing one way in the cot, she also likes to turn 180 degrees. There were some times when her face would be squashed up against the bars or even sleeping in a sorting of kneeling, face down (think of how how Muslim men pray). She never seemed bothered by it. She's also sometimes stuck an arm out and if she undid the bag - rare - a foot might stick out too!

They don't seem to mind too much either way

Hi Sally

I think most kids do the same, My little boy (Kyle) stays in the same position all nite but my little girl (Brodi) moves around all nite she starts off on her back then ends up face down in a ball if not she goes to top off the cot and lies in a ball in the corner, she does this every nite!! I notice our kids share the same birthday i had my twins in the 27th January!!

Hi Sally,

Well Alex just won't sleep properly in his cot at all full stop. Alex is just a little fidget anyway lol. I always put him to sleep on his back but you can always garanatee the way Alex will sleep is on his belly with his face down turned to the side. I have one of those grobags also but the top of it keeps popping on so I may need to get next size up, what age do they stay in them till? When can they go in a bed?

Hi girls .... just to add my comments too. Alice wriggles and wriggles and is always contorted into positions I've only previously seen playing Twister!!

I think they're all the same. Once she got her leg stuck through the cot railings when she's sort of kicked the bumper to one side - she soon let us know she was not too happy about that!!!

From our room I can hear her wriggling and moving and I just lie awake listening for the next turning over or jumping session !!!

Gets worse if they have a cold or cough as they are struggling to breath properly too - then it's a real nightmare!!! Alice inisists on sleeping on her front now with her head to one side - she has just started doing this over the last 2-3 weeks (shes 8 months+)

Hi girls - well I'm glad I've not got the only wriggly worm! This morning I went in and he was right at the top of the cot on all fours trying to reach through the bars to the interesting items on the shelf on his changing station! Lucky I went in when I did only he was making a grab for the St Francis of Assis medallion that one of my friends brought me back from r Rome (so St Francis could look over him). so it's obviously working as St Francis must have alerted me to go in at the crucial time!

At night I still even now creep into Jay's room to watch him sleep and give thanks for our miracle baby. we are all just so blessed arent we? I keep thinking back to this time last year when I was still pregnant, and to the year before when our first IVF had just failed, and sometimes I still can't believe how lucky I am. Sometimes it makes me amazed when someone calls me Jay's mummy (got to stop now or I'll cry!!).

Jo - I know what you mean about lying and listening - this morning I swear Jay was running his dummy up and down the bars of the cot like in prison! At least that's what it sounded like.

Shell - I got jay the boigger sleeping bag - the ones from John Lewis or Mothercare zip from the top down so they can't pop open and little fingers can't undo them. Jay's is the 6 month - 18 month ( think and is the winter 2 tog one). don't think they can go in a bed until they're 3 (am sure I read that somewhere. Jay sleeps like Alex - starts out on his back but ends up on his front or side, bless em. wonder what could be waking Alex up? Jay wakes when he gets stuck somewhere in the cot then I go in, put his dummy in and he's back to sleep till he moves round again. Wonder what could be waking Alex up? Are there any toys in it? apparently you shouldn't put any toys in as it stimulates them too much. could it be noisy or too hot or toocold? Jay had a big problem with early waking (esp in summer) but we finally tracked it down to light coming in through the top f the curtains - that's not a problem in winter, but wonder what could be waking him?

Hi Louise - what a very special day 27th january is! I'm pleased because apparently Aquarians are quite rare (the least represented sign of all) and they're very artistic. My birthday's Jan 4th so we'll have a lovely January full of presents!!!

I already have the same with Emily at 4.5 months! she plays spin the bottle with herself! I have found it better by giving them a one tog towelling grobag - so the summer one and placing a sheet lengthwise across the cot if that makes sense and tucking it in - keeps them in place better! Alice is normally so bolloxed she stays put at the moment. Emily is growing out of her 0-6 months already as she has legs to go on forever (not sure where from?) so will get the next size up - John Lewis they were but JO maman and blooming marvellous and bump to 3 do them too...

Phoebe is exactly the same. I put her to sleep on her back and she rolls on to her belly but has her face to one side. Its got to be a baby thing!!! Shes now 8 and a half month and I too sneak in before I go to bed and peer lovingly over the cot. I wonder sometimes how I ever got by without her. I also have to put her to bed every night - if I'm out then I will specifically come home for 9.00 just so I can do it!!!!

Shell, you asked about grobags and beds. I think people try to keep them in their cots until they learn to climb out OR for babies close together (sigh), if they need the cot for No.2.

I've used sleeping sacks with Maya since her birth and just bought one that will go up to 36m. It's huge, from Mothercare and is a 2 or 2.5tog. She's always had the zipped ones but has learned how to undo the ones with lower zips so tiny feet often pop out.

I took a card and photo into our clinic today. Maya was their first baby girl and so they've always made a huge fuss over her. So sweet.

Hi have not been on for ages. I have the same problem with Duncan i got up the other morning to find him lying with his feet stuck out of the side of the cot and he was just laughing and he was frozen. We have to check on him a couple of times a night he just wriggles all the time.
Its good to know he is not the only baby and we are not alone.

He is six months now and is getting so big some of his 6-9 months clothes are a bit tight.

Helen, have you tried a sleeping sack/bag? they really help keep the babies in the cot, plus warm of course. It's part of our nighttime routine, Maya knows that when she's zipped into the bag that it's sleeptime. It works some of the time!!
