RH negative?

Post by JennaJay »

I just found out that I am RH negative...
My husband is O positive, I am kind of blown away.
Why hadn't anyone caught this problem before in all my testing?
Is this why I haven't gotten pregnant for 6 years and miscarried last year?
Does anyone know anything about this?

HMMMMMMMM

Jenna ... At my last EC they told me I was rhesus negative. I thought they said I would need antibiotics if I ever got pregnant, but having just looked on the web, they talk about a "shot" of RH immunoglobulin being needed.

From what I can gather, the problem is that if the woman is rh-ve, and the chap is rh+ve, the baby could possibly be rh+ve too (if both woman and chap are rh-ve, baby too will be rh-ve so no problem).

So, if woman rh-ve and chap rh+ve, the baby is most likely to be RH +ve. This means that mother and baby's blood is incompatible.... therefore shot needed. It also talks about a shot being needed after a miscarriage, to prevent future antibodies developing.

It doesn't say anything about the partner's blood group causing a fertilisation problem.

As you would expect there's tons of stuff on the Net. Just do a Google on "RH negative" and choose the 3rd site that comes up.

Hi Jenna,

Just to let you know, I'm RH Neg and my husband is positive, Ive had 2 ectopic preg and after both of those I had injection and when my son was born (through IVF) I had to have injection again. Its caused no problems with me!! I don't know the ins and outs but it has something to do with if my blood mixes with babies it could be dangerous, hence injection!!

Good luck to you

Hi Jenna, I'm also RH -ve, and when I had my 2 ectopics I was given a shot of what they called "anti-D", but I wasn't given it with the 2 miscarriages I've had.

I don't understand much about it I'm afraid - but what little bit I remember from what the nurses told me is that first pregnancies arn't a problem - it is in subsequent pregnancies that the problem may arise. This is why they give you the injection to prevent the antibodies from being produced and hence avoid problems in the future. Hope that makes some sense.

I'm pretty sure that it doesn't have an impact on fertility or miscarriages.

Hope this has put your mind to rest a bit.

Dear Jenna,

I found out I was O neg purely by chance as well - it has nothing to do with fertility at all.

As the others have said, you'll need to have anti-D injections.

It's not a probem in a first pregnancy, but in a second pregnancy, if you don't have the anti-D injections, your baby's blood could react with yours, and your body would see the baby as an intruder. The anti d stops that reaction.

All very confusing but nothing at all to worry about.

I was given a card to carry by the blood transfusion service and when I had my baby by c section, because I haemorrhaged a lot they had to give me a transfusion of o neg. Once i'd recovered I was quite keen to return the favour and become a blood donor, but if you've had a blood transfusion you can't give blood which is a shame as I would have liked to have done my bit, as only 15% of the population are o neg.

Hope this helps,love Sally xxx
