HSG

Post by Savannah »

Hi everyone,
I know this is a really stupid question, but I am having an HSG on Thursday and I have heard it is quite painful, is it? What pain killer is the best to take? Also, how long is it before you get the results? Sorry, as you can see I haven't asked many questions when I first found out I needed to go for this. Any help will be so appreciated! Thanks
Savannah

Hi Savannah,

I had a HSG about 18 months ago, to be honest I can't remember it being painful, uncomfortable yes, but painful no. What I didn't like was the little wash and brush up I got prior to the `insertion`. They kind of soap you up with what looks like a mop from a car wash (very much smaller, I hasten to add!), that took me a little bit by surprise.

Any way I'm sure that everyone's experience is different, so try not to worry.

I think we got our results about a week or so later, as we'd had various tests so had to wait for them to compile the results of each.

I know what you mean about not asking questions, I think it's because at the time you feel as though they've covered everything, but then you think of something when you leave.

Suzanne.x

Hi Savannah,

I had a HSG back in March. Unlike Suzanne I did find it painfull - it wasn't till afterwards I found out that you could take painkillers, the type you would take for peirod pains. I got my results straight away as they came up on a screen - really quite facinating 4 pictures showing various angles of my ovaries and tubes and the nurse pointed out the dye so you could see the route it had taken. The consultant then followed up with a letter with the results or I could have gone to see him - both tubes were clear which is quite interesting because the laproscopy I had showed the right as being blocked.

Good luck let us know how you get on. Will be thinking of you.
love Chrissi

Hi there
I had the same experience as Chrissi but both my tubes were pretty much blocked. It wasn't that painful, a bit like having a smear only a tad worse. Don't worry too much about it - you'll be fine.

Good luck and we're always here if you need us.

lol
Lissa
x

Hi Savannah,

I also had one about 18 months ago and I did find it hurt, but it was bearable. It felt a bit like someone was trying to pull your insides out!! The image on the screen was fascinating though and my ovaries / tubes didn't look at all like they do in the text books!! My were all over the place. I think I took some paracetamol beforehand, as recommended by the hospital. One piece of advice - take a panty liner with you. I didn't take one and ended up having a hospital regulation one which was the size of a brick! I had a nice summer skirt on and was so worried that it was sticking out the back that I had to walk back to the car holding my handbag behind me!

Anyway, don't get too stressed about it - it'll be fine,

Alison

Hi Chrissi,
Thanks for asking! Yes, it was painful and I still feel very uncomfortable! The chappy that did the scan wasn't very clear in giving me an answer, he said that my consultant would have to give me the results, but my tubes look OK? He also said he wouldn't know what my consultant is going to do about this????? What the *** did he mean? If my tubes aren't blocked, then that isn't the problem! Isn't it that clear? Or are there any other interesting results that can show up on a scan like that? Oh, well, I am neurotic about it all, that is probably why I'm not pregnant! ha Ha, guess we'll just have to see next week when I see yet another specialist.
Thanks for the support,
Savannah

Hi Savannah

Its a good sign if your tubes are clear. I wouldn't read too much into what the chappy said he's not the expert he just does the xrays. Wait and see what the consultant says. My tubes were clear too however we decided to go with IUI as we felt we weren't getting anywhere and didn't want to wait any longer doing more tests as I'm getting to that crucial age. Hope that uncomfortable feeling goes away soon and good luck.
love Chrissi.
