How often does OHS occur?

This will be my first IVF cycle and I was wondering how often people expierienced Ovarian Hyperstimulation. My MD scarred me when I went for teaching in stating you can gain 15lbs in one night when you get this. YOu can be hospitilzed etc. I know cycles get cancelled if they are worried about it occuring?

Easier said than done - but try not to worry about it too much

The hospitals and clinics are well aware of it and keep a careful eye on you and yes cycles do get cancelled if they are worried (mine did). I don't know about putting weight on if it happens - sorry.

Try not to worry about getting it, it will just make this time worse and you don't need the added worry of what ifs.
When you start on you stim drugs your clinic will closely monitor you with regular scans and bloods and if they think you are at risk will reduce your drugs and keep an even closer eye on you.
My experience in April was - on the friday was told my follies weren't big enough so had to carry on with the drugs over the weekend, on the monday was warned i was now at risk of OHSS and was told i was to have my e/c on the wednesday and if they collected more than 20 eggs then they would do a total freeze all as it would be too risky to transfer any embryos. Turned out they collected 22 eggs. I only had mild symptoms, very bloated stomach, uncomfortable.
I've heard it's actually quite rare to get get hospitalised with OHSS but it does happen in the severe cases.

When you start your stims just remember to drink lots of water, it helps keep OHSS at bay and try not to worry.

You are more likely to get it if you have PCOS. I have and suffered mild OHSS after EC. All embies were frozen and I have had ET since (twice!)

I have to say, I was told to rest and drink etc. I wasnt monitored too much, they seemed confident it wouldnt develop worse. I think servere OHSS is very rare.

I started my stim drups on Sat. and on Tues they tested my E2 level and US, anyway the E2 was only 36 so they upped my stim from 300 to 500 per day. So I feel fine but I was reading alot and most people are only on 400 or so, so of course my mind starts wandering and I think the worse that i will be that one person who goes haywire and get OS!!!! Tomorrow I go for more BW and US---Will see then I quess

I had a fairly mild/moderate case after my retrieval -- definitely not fun. They retrieved 19 eggs and I was worried I'd be cancelled, but everything turned out fine. (The whole uncomfortable deal actually turned into a BFP!)

Anyway, I was told to drink lots of Gatorade, which did help. Try not to worry too much, however. Just keep your fluids up and get lots of rest!

Since i am new at this... the higher number of eggs means a higher risk... obviosly because the more follicles the higher the E2??? Sometimes if I talk it out it becomes clear

Hi Brooke,

Just to reinforce what everyone else has said - try not to worry about OHSS if you can.
You will be very closely monitored and if there's any sign of it your drugs will be reduced straight away.
I had 36 follicles before EC and my levels were very high and I was on the border of OHSS.
But they proceeded safely, collected 30 eggs and I was fine.
I felt very, very uncomfortable for a while afterwards, but I didn't develop anything nasty.
